By derek tuoriniemi (Derek) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 08:28 am:

good morning, its -31 here in grand forks, so if anyone else complains about the cold today...YOU'RE WRONG!!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 08:31 am:

Good Morning! Yikes, it's cold out there! I got home about 7:30 am from taking my youngest to high school. It was -6, with a wind chill of -26. The only school districts that are not closed today because of the cold are ours (Midland), Meridean, & Bay Public. The rest are all closed because of the Wind Chill Warning for dangerous wind chill temps. Our winds are supposed to increase a fair amount about 10 am, which will drop our wind chill temps even more.

Stay inside if you can! Whatever you do, stay warm & have a good day.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 08:31 am:

I know derek, my son told me this weekend that he HATES Grand Forks. I feel badly for all of you. And just think, that's air temp. Then you get to add that nasty wind chill that never goes away up there.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 08:38 am:

No Derek, we aren't all wrong. Your air temps are colder than ours, but then North Dakota is known for its frigid weather in the winter. I've heard real tales about Minot, ND in the winter. But then, I don't plan on living in North Dakota, either. Once you get below zero, well...

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 08:57 am:

Dat Dean's a poet and he don't know it!!
Those pasties just warmed me up and made my mouth water!
A very cold good morning to all! Not as cold as North Dakota, -10 in Illinois.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 09:18 am:

Oh, my, those pasties look DELICIOUS. I can almost smell them. I'm either going to have to order some or get busy making my own so I can fill my house with the smell of baking pasties and then fill my tummy with their yummy.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 09:44 am:

It is 54 degrees warmer here in Knoxville,TN.then it is in Grand Forks. You do the math, cause it's cold enough for me! Lot's of Sunshine to you all.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 10:22 am:

David, the sunshine near Ann Arbor is Blinding. Its beautiful if you just look outside. Why is it that Bright sun in winter means it is REALLY cold?

By NKR (Nkr) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 10:31 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Its -2° here in northern Indiana. We're in for a heat wave tomorrow. Its suppose to get up to 10°. Just one more thing to say - YEA COLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 10:39 am:

All the schools are closed around here today. I don't remember schools closing like this for the cold. When my kids were in school they didn't go out for recess on the really cold days. It was about -5° this morning and about 0° right now. It is supposed to be about the same temps for the next 2 nights. I wonder if they will be closed the next couple days as well. Do the schools in the UP close for cold temperatures?

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 11:12 am:

A 2nd good morning from Mishawaka, IN.

NKR good to see you here again. I, too, say Yea Colts. I am a Bears fan at heart but love it that a team from Indiana won.

Our schools in Mishawaka are all closed. Our students are not bused but must walk. For some that is quite a walk. So on days as cold as today I understand why they close. But we do have to make the day up.

The sun is shining brightly but it looks so cold.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 11:14 am:

Bright sun means no clouds and no clouds means no blanket over Mother Earth to keep her warm.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 11:43 am:

Da Bridge is back - cam wise, that is, and LIVE! :)
Great pic, with all that snow ...

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:07 pm:

I think there is another take on this frigid weather: this is severe cold, at least for our area: (yes, the kids are in danger of frost bite when they are either walking to school or waiting for school buses), but there might be one huge difference compared to prior years, in addition to the colder temperatures this year, at least for many of the school districts here in Michigan. With the state of Michigan's extreme budget shortfall, and the governor's talking about going back & revising the (K-12) school budgets for this school year, & taking back from each school district up to $225/pupil for THIS school year, the school districts have no place to cut any money at all out of their budgets this late into the school year. Some districts are already saying that they will have to lay off teachers & staff because they have already made all of the other possible cuts, leaving personnel as the last resort. My point is that we haven't seen cold like this for a number of years, so, the school districts have not budgeted enough for the additional heating expenses for these extreme cold temperatures. Why do I say this? I just spent 45 minutes in our high school office, waiting for my middle son, for his speech therapy appt. While I was sitting, waiting in the office, many kids came in, commenting on "how warm" the office was to anyone who would listen, & that they were so cold in their classrooms that their teachers had to let them wear their coats in the classrooms today, which is normally not even allowed! (I was so cold sitting in the office, that they called warm, that I wore my coat the whole time.)

My point in all of this: if they can't heat the classrooms to a point that the students are warm enough to be there without their coats on, then the schools should be closed. (As I noted earlier this morning, ours was one of only 3 school districts that was open this morning in the region, while well over 100 school districts were closed. Our district should have been closed, too, given the apparent constraints that would not even allow them to properly heat the classrooms, in addition to the danger of frostbite while students were walking to/from school or waiting for school buses. We were -6, with a wind chill of -26 when I took my youngest son to school this morning.)

By NKR (Nkr) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:16 pm:

Hello from Mishawaka IN again. Hi Charlotte. I'm glad they closed the schools. My 4yr.old grandson goes to special preschool classes at LaSalle. He takes the bus but its just too cold for kids to walk or wait for the bus. I too have been a Bears fan but since I am a Hoosier I had to cheer for the team that represents my state. Glad to see the bridge cam up and running! Keep warm everyone!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:17 pm:

Marianne, sounds like your school district is more concerned with their allowance from the state than the safety of the students.
When I was working, I had a weather theory; It's not worth risking your life for a day's pay. In this case it's not worth risking your son's life for a day's lessons.

By P.Weed (Pweed) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:21 pm:

It's a balmy 57 degrees here in Florida today!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:29 pm:

Marianne, There were very few schools open this morning and from what you say about the heat it is a good thing. Too bad your kids had too freeze indoors today. I watch the news in Lansing in the morning and the list when on for quite a while before I could see what was happening in my county (Livingston)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:43 pm:

One other thing that I forgot to mention was that apparently one of the classrooms (or a room in the high school, anyway) had to be closed off this morning because a pipe had frozen & burst! No wonder the kids were cold. The high school is 50 years old now, so it probably does not have the insulation, etc, that would be up to today's building standards, anyway.

By derek tuoriniemi (Derek) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:54 pm:

honestly,i dont mind the cold, it gets old after a few months but its not that bad, i was outside this morning for a good while when it was -31 and spent about 2 and a half hours outside last nite when it was -29, as long as you know how to dress its nothing that you cant handle...

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 01:54 pm:

I also think they should close the schools for the bitter cold, especially with the wind chill. I just didn't ever remember them closing like this before for the cold.
I agree with you Joanie. It's not worth risking you life for. There were days when our school was open and we thought it should be closed because of the road conditions, and kept them home anyway. Another thing that I thought was ridiculous was when the school was closed because of dangerous driving conditions, yet they still would have practice for sports programs, just because streets in town were cleared by evening. But most of the time the backroads were not.

By Kelly Kidd (Ellykay) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 02:29 pm:

Good Morning from Valley Springs Ca.
65° here today. We are finally out of our freeze.
Going camping and fishing this weekend.
I miss the snow of Mich. but not the deep freeze like your having now. Stay warm everyone. K2

Group: You might be 'chilly' because its hard to keep your shirt on when you're getting something off your chest.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 03:07 pm:

I do recall school being closed in Ontonagon back in the early 70s because the temperature, not including wind chill, was -50 degrees. That was one cold day. I went outside to hear the trees cracking in the cold. Brrrr....

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 03:43 pm:

The schools in Mishawaka, IN have already been closed for tomorrow.I got my call about 2:00 pm.
It's still going to be below zero tonight and we are under a wind chill advisory until late tomorrow.

Marianne Y. I know exactly how the kids feel about being cold at school. I keep a fleece jacket at my desk and always wear at least 2 layers of clothes. It is always chilly in the building and the temperatures were no where near what they are today or will be tomorrow. I know our district has kept the heat down in all buildings because of the money crunch.

Stay warm!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 04:50 pm:

Derek, you're absolutely right about dressing for the cold. Took the dog out this morning, temp was -10, not as bad as your climate, I had everything covered except my eyes and I stayed warm. The dog got "cold feet" and I had to carry him back to the house.
Just to let you know; I still like "The Grateful Dead" too!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 04:55 pm:

Gormfrog, you have a way with words, or maybe words with ways!!!!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 05:21 pm:

well, its warmed up a lot here in Wisconsin ...its 0 with a -20 chill. THank god we have global warming or it would really be cold.

The BRIDGE CAM IS UP ...Yea !!!!
looks like its snowing like craze up there.

Those pasties sure look good. Wish I had a couple right now...but we're having chili which is a fitting dish on such a warm day

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 06:00 pm:

Yeah; I agree, we can talk politics anytime. We all know what a huge deficit Engler left our State in and now we have to pay for it. The same is going to happen to with the Federal budget, our president has run the country further in the red than all other presidents combined and sooner or later we will have to have huge tax increases and huge budget cuts to pay for it.

Joanie--you really do need to get some snow boots for Joey for his cold weather walks! (They also protect paws from salt, if there is any, on your roads, driveway, sidewalks, etc.! Poor little Joey, with the cold feet!

When my dogs run around in the backyard in the snow (& it's much warmer than it is now, so the snow will pack of course), they come in with snowballs all over their feet. I clip the hair between the pads on their paws, & it seems to help somewhat, at least.

We haven't heard from Capt Paul & Dr Nat for a few days. I wonder if they have any comments on the winter storms, cold, Winter Carnival, etc. I heard that it was deemed to be too cold for outdoor Carnival activities on Winter Carnival this weekend, so the kids weren't supposed to be working on the snow sculptures, etc. I know that broomball games were canceled from 3:30 on Sat, thru all day on Sunday, because of the cold.

Hello again from Mishawaka IN. WOW, what a beautiful bridge cam picture tonight!

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 09:43 pm:

Schools are already closed for Ontonagon tomorrow. We sure have gotten the snow. We still have a Winter Storm Warning up till 8 am tomorrow morning. So stay warm and if you have to venture out make sure you venture out with the righ attire with you! Sure going to be a freezing one again!

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 09:48 pm:

right* spelled that one wrong already, its really too cold to even try and type tonite!!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 10:55 pm:

Did anyone hear Paul Harvey this morning? He said that Embarrass, MN had -42° today. Cornell only got down to a -11 during the night. But with that wind! Piercing or biting, whatever you'd call it, it is cold! Yup, all the school districts around here were closed, too. Right now, the Oregon Scientific says -3.3°. I have the foundation all banked up with snow to keep the wind off. I've heard that snow is an 'ethnic' insulation. ;o)

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 10:58 pm:

The Oregon Scientific is a digital time/temp, indoor and outdoor thermometer on my kitchen wall. It also has an alarm on it that I don't know how to shut off. :o)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 11:26 pm:

Marianne, That is unbelieveable how Michigan is cutting the expenses for educating our future. Always notice how when it comes to budget cuts, they begin with the schools? How do they expect kids to learn, if they are freezing in the class rooms?

Well Da Abbi is learning to adjust to the cold weather, and Bailey is doing her best to make a Yooper doggie out of her. Yesterday, when I let the dogs out, Bailey stood guard over the garage service door, and wouldn't let Da Abbi back in, until Bailey was good and ready to come in. And today, despite the cold, Da Abbi even ventured over to the neighbors for her nightly snack.
Joanie, I've been thinking of getting those doggie booties that Marianne mentioned, for Da Abbi and Bailey. Although I only let them stay outside for a few minutes in the cold, I always worry about the pads of their feet freezing and cracking in the winter. If I got them booties, would that make the doggies Boootiefull?

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 - 01:30 am:

Brooke: Generally when the high pressure air masses move from the north, particulary the colder it is, then the less humidity, less smog, pollution etc. the air is much clearer. Also at this time of the year the angle of the sun is such it is brighter. Contrary to which one would think, at this time of year, our orbit brings us actually closer to the sun! BTW, for these reasons for those with Solar energy panels, February all around proves to be the best benefit pay off month!

Alaska: "If Al Gore is right they will have the most comfortable weather"!

YEA COLTS!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 - 07:13 am:

Ken, living in MN, Embarass definitely has the right name. They did have -42 yesterday. It seems they're always like that. Our schools were open which surprised the heck out of me. I thought it was too cold for those kids to stand out at the bus stop.
