Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 08:33 am:

Our own 'Bootjackbabe' Dorothy Stewart spotted a rare Walliae Hatimus Flapus as far south as the Buckeye State this week. Looks like he could have been on his way to Winter Carnival up in the Keweenaw, which brought a lot of excitement to the Copper Country the past few days. Dorthy also included a peaceful scene at the Columbus, Ohio golf course after it had received about 4 inches of snow during the cold snap.

These are good examples of shots from places other than the U.P. which you will find in our photo Guest Gallery, which is currently being upgraded. Pictures don't necessarily have to be of Upper Michigan, but can also include a glimpse of life where you live, and the connection you have with those of us who live up here in the water winter wonderland.

The new Guest Gallery should be premiering in a few days, with some new features and navigation which we think you will enjoy. If you've been trying to access your Gallery Album this week, it has been temporarily suspended until the upgrade is complete. We're almost up to 50,000 photos!

Have you ordered your delicious Valentine pasties yet? At the moment there still appears to be room on the express trucks leaving Calumet Monday, in time for Wednesday delivery.

As you may know, in 1996 pasty.com was started, featuring pictures of the crew of elderly Copper Country residents peeling veggies for their favorite meal. But it was Winter Carnival 1997 when we first started posting other pictures here at Pasty Central. At the end of this month the Pasty Cam will begin year number 10 of our daily photo journal, without having missed a single day. Thanks for coming along!

By the way, if you haven't noticed, the Bridge Cam is fully operational again.

Wow, nothing worse than a "fish outta da water!" Nice shots.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 08:50 am:

Now Joanie, that fish was a smart one he kept his head covered. Great pictures Dorothy!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 09:01 am:

That is one ugly fish!!!!!!!!!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 09:59 am:

Mr Yooper Walleye was even tagged (check under his tail). He could help you keep warm, with his stuffing. :-)

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 10:44 am:

hmmm...how about we have him for dinner.

Its great to have the bridge cam back up. Its my favorite view, even more so than the tech web cams, although the view cam is cool...but you can't see the College Motel sign anymore. What happened to that?

10 years..wow...congrats for the longevity. This is the best site on the web

"... but you can't see the College Motel sign anymore. What happened to that?"

What, you hadn't heard? It's been torn down, to be replaced by apartments(?).

Another local icon bites the dust!

I just did a search of ye olde DMG for the article I saw earlier, but it is apparently no longer in the archive.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 11:14 am:

Boy that Marianne has an "eagle" eye!
The fish reminds me of a song my mom used to sing to us kids:
Fishy, fishy, in the brook,
Papa caught him on the hook,
Mama fried him in the pan
Baby ate him like a man.

Re College Motel:
Hmmm, seems I spoke too soon, here's the minutes of the Houghton Planning Commission meeting of Sept 26, 2006 (in PDF Format), where it says:

Quote:

"Ken Dillinger of U.P. Engineering submitted a proposal for a new
apartment complex on the property where the College Motel
presently sits. There would be 22 units varying from one to four
bedrooms.
John Kirk reviewed the site plan with the commission including a
two-tier parking lot. There are plans for 80 students and they have
included 80 parking spaces. The building will be 21,000 square feet.
The exterior will be block with decorative panels made from
prefinished metal or a siding material. Scott MacInnes said the
parking area meets the ordinance of providing one parking space per
bed.
The estimated cost to build the building is $2,600,000 including
acquisition. Projected rent is less than $500 per person per month as
that is the rate that students pay in the dorms. Tenants will pay for
electrical only."

Yes, Charlie. It's great to have the Bridge Cam back again.
Thanks.

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 11:50 am:

Just checked the bridge cam picture and there is a BIG FLY on the screen----too funny!!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 11:50 am:

Check the bridge cam...there's a huge fly sitting on it... LOL
Looks like its snowing up there.

Bummer on the College Motel. I'm not sure what it is, but that sign moving back and forth just always caught my eye...from when I was a kid until the last time I saw it.

Anyone know what happened to the sign?

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 12:11 pm:

There were always a couple of landmarks, if you will, that I remember...
One was driving into Lake Linden from Hubbell..that yellow flashing light.

Going into Houghton that big sign that said Copper Country...breathing the purist air...

The College Motel neon sign..that was always my favorite.

The Chippewa Restaurant and motel in Chassell

The Golden Pheasant going into Hancock

There used to be a bar on Sheldon in Houghton..on the right side driving towards the bridge..there were glass columns and tiles..plus quite a bit of neon..can't remember the name, bu that was a cool place...

there are so many more...somewhere was a gas station that had that big green dinosaur on its sign...
and one with red horse head or similar on those glass light up domes on top of the pumps...I can remember them, but not where or exactly what they were....hmmm...the brain is going :)

:David Soumis (Davesou):
"Anyone know what happened to the [College Motel] sign?"

Hanging in a dorm room window at Wads? (Well it would have been back in the old days - crazy engineers!)

Careful Dave, you're dating yourself. (But who am I to talk!)

"... hmmm...the brain is going"
That too... comes with increasing age!

Chessie

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 12:51 pm:

Was the bar you are thinking of called the REX???

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:02 pm:

Hi dorothy....yes, I think that was the name ...
if my memory serves me right :)
Didn't it burn down or something? I remember there being a lot of fires around Houghton...also a big one just west of the bridge...must have been back in the 50s or so.

It would be so cool to see pictures of all those old places.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:12 pm:

Dave S: Don't know exactly which or where the stations you mean but the green dinosaur was "Sinclair". The Red horse symbol was the old MOBIL Oil "Socony Vacuum"(now Mobil/Exxon) I remember real well the big Shell station right at the end of the Hancock side of the bridge, and there was "Brunos" Texaco just up the road going into Hancock! Around the corner there somewhere was Komulas Chrysler dealer. I went to school with and knew well the owners kids John & Bertha Komula. Then of course who can forget the A & P store there?

I remember the Golden Pheasant well! And I think it might have been REX as Bootjackbabe mentions.

Yep, got the brain going now---days gone by!

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:22 pm:

The Rex bar burnt down in the early sixties. We would go there on Friday nights after the hockey games and dance. It was owned by a girl name Dorene Yost---she went to tech at one time.
Does any body remember the "Board of Trade" bar which is now the Library??

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:34 pm:

A&P...yes..we used to do pretty much all our grocery shopping there :)

Library Bar...that was a great place to go and have one too many beers LOL
Pheasant too.. I wasn't around much when I was old enough to go in there, but did manage to make a few visits when I would go home for holidays, whatever.

The Shell station--Godell Oil, wan't it ? ... then wasn't there a big sign pointing to the mine tours or something in Riply on the wall straight ahead?

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:36 pm:

Charlie, I am loving the LIVE BridgeCam now -- such a lovely view.

Davesou, where was the College Motel sign?

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:37 pm:

Board of Trade Bar was the meeting spot for the adults on Tuesday night after the South American came to dock at the old Cohadas building (for those who drank, of course)

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:41 pm:

Just think, there were 5 gas stations on the main street of Houghton that aren't there anymore. Standard, Shell, Texaco, Mobil and Sinclair. WOW! Sorry, this should be on the What's Up page.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:43 pm:

eugebia..the College Motel sign was right at the end of Tech campus, on the right side across from a bank as you drive into Houghton from Chassell...
There is a big curve there where the road goes from 2 to 1 lane ...just before all the fraternity houses and stuff.

It was visible on the Tech VIEW CAM for a long time...not sure when I noticed it was gone...not all that long ago.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:45 pm:

Eugenia...sorry, I slipped a sp into your name there :)

Nostalgia really grabs me anymore. Perhaps this should be over in the whats up, but that fish...I'm having a hard time talking about that :)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 02:54 pm:

I consider The Chippewa Hotel a landmark too, I know I am just a few miles away. Isn't the restaurant gone now? I remember going there with my Grandma when she cleaned rooms there one summer.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 03:08 pm:

The Chippewa Restaurant burned down a few years ago, I think just before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving. That was a favorite of mine.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 04:50 pm:

It is so sad that all the historic land marks are being torn down and replaced with generic, quickie, money-making, ugly, no personality buildings. Greed sure is taking over this world.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 04:56 pm:

Pictures needed!!
With the Guest Gallery unavailable during the upgrade, I'm hoping some of you out there will email me if you might have a few pictures of the Snow Statues to share. You can drop me a note to let me know if you have any at: mdrew@pasty.com. Hold off sending the pictures until after you hear back from me though....thanks for your help! :->

Is a Walleye and Pickerel the same kind of fish?

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 11:37 pm:

Dave my friend, Yes they are! Depends what area they are or what era comes to mind!

By tom ghering (Tomgheringtcmi) on Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 11:48 pm:

Is anybody out there old enough to remember when we called them beer gardens instead of bars???

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, February 11, 2007 - 02:47 am:

Oh yes Tom! Back in the 40s as a boy I remember them. The term goes way back to ? maybe the 1800s and continued into the 50s maybe longer? Also "Taverns", term still used, mostly in Europe along with "Pubs"!
