This little cabin, caught by Jonathan Hopper eight years ago, sits between Jacob's Falls and Great Sand Bay along M-26.

If you are looking ahead to Valentine's Day, how about a Valentine pasty, ordered online from Pasty Central?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 09:29 am:

First PostMorning! Mr. Deb

By jmac (Jillann) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 09:38 am:

Good Morning

By jefflarae (Jefflarae) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 09:55 am:

Is there something different and special in a Valetines Day Pasty?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 09:59 am:

It is a conspiracy, if it isn't Deb it is Mr. Deb I try to get the early bird, honest I try but I keep failing it has been many months since I won. Tim you remember when I won don't you?
Broken hearted in Berkley with the sky blue and very cold. But both pictures today make it worth signing on.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 10:02 am:

Sorry Mikie, just came in to check the mail and there was todays picture. Maybe it's those little candy hearts in a Valentine pasty.
Mr. Deb

By Carole (Carole) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 10:08 am:

OMG!!! I grew up in that camp as a little girl. A few years back I had requested that a photo be taken of the camp and posted on the website, and to my surprise it was. What great memories I have of all the good times I spent there. But I miss all of my family that have passed away since. It now belongs to a cousin that lives in Wisconsin. When we stay in Eagle Harbor we pass it all the time, but it is hard for me to see it sitting there by itself without anyone in it. But unfortunately it needs major updates and some real tender loving care.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 10:45 am:

Good morning from the thumb. We have lots of nice fluffy snow. It is so beautiful. I love winter when it looks like winter.
Mikie, I remember when you won the early bird. You won it a few times I think. You even thanked those that helped make it possible. You were so humble and gracious. Just treasure those memories:)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 10:52 am:

I'll try to sleep in next time Mikie, honest.
Mr. Deb

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 11:50 am:

I try to be humble but it is hard since I am from Hubbell Michigan the center of the Hungarian Falls and the prettiest scenery in the world. Does anyone have any pictures of the bluff in the winter? Can't get in there in the winter since I am so old and decrepit [sp] sure wish I was able to get into there.

By upmama (Upmama) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 12:00 pm:

Mikie, I, too remember the day you won the Early Bird award. What a glorious day for you and your entire family! I would imagine you celebrated for weeks... Please don't get too despondent; perhaps Pasty.com would consider awarding you a "Mr. Congeniality" award or something similar on days you get up early but miss the coveted prize.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 01:25 pm:

There is only about 1/2 inch of snow here in Rochester Hills. Still lots of ice though. I plan on enjoying the UP scenery in Feb, to watch the UP 200 Dog Sled races. I was getting a little worried when there wasnt any snow in the UP, that they would cancel the dog sled races, but Marquette has snow now!!

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 02:58 pm:

Wow Mikie...wasn't that a Glorious Day!
Who could ever forget THAT day!
It will happen again...I have faith in you.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 03:22 pm:

I love that little cabin.

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 04:07 pm:

I could be wrong, but the cabin seems to have composition siding (essentially tar-paper with embedded granules). You see this around the U.P. a lot, often simulating brick patterns. Out here in the Pacific Northwest, it is pretty rare to find it on buildings. Seeing that cabin reminded me of how the buildings back home have a character all their own. From Portage Entry Sandstone on the big churches and banks, to the small tar-paper shacks in the woods, it just says home to me when I see it. Hope you all are having a great day.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 04:46 pm:

kj, hey, found another Bear's fan, yippppeeee! Should be a great game with the snow coming in! Love watching football when nature adds a little action. I can't really get into a dome game, it sure isn't real football! This should be one interesting game!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 05:42 pm:

What a mixed bag of emotions you had from seeing the Little Cabin here today Carole.Isn't it nice?

Mikie; I feel your pain.I got spanked this morming in yesterday's post's it woke me up.I just stopped quivering enough to be able to post.
You use big words like (conspiracy)and all I used little words like ink and white-out.You are well liked here.I bet everyone will not post anything until after you do tomorrow.I will wait for you,if every other says they will.I promise! x

My one and only Early Bird Award came on June 17,2004 @ 6:52 a.m. However I was so nieve I sent it back because I thought there was only one and it was needed to be passed on.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 06:17 pm:

It is bad enough Dave, being beat constantly by Deb, but now she has Mr. Deb beating me, he should be out fishing. Don't anyone wait for me to post tomorrow, I like the chase and would be disapointed if it was rigged. Course Mary could call and tell me when she is going to post, that wouldn't be cheating would it. I am really homesick today want more snow, and Margaret in Amarillo is hogging it all. Tim how is the snow by you? Poor Frank doesn't get any snow out there in the hot west, so I guess I am better off then Him.

By Carole (Carole) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 06:22 pm:

Richard: Yes the camp has compostion siding aound it. It was built in 1947 by my grandfather and uncles. A few years later a room was added that you see to the right of the picture. Electricity was added sometime in the 70's but there is no running water, therefore no indoor plumbing. Up until recently there was a long bench on the side of the camp, on a slight hill towards the back that we would sit on and watch the cars go by and wait to see a freighter or two out on the lake. In the evening we would build a big bonfire on the beach and roast potatoes on the hot rocks. In August I would pick thimbleberries with my grandparents and after grandma made jam, I would sit with her in front of the camp alongside the road selling it. Today I buy the jam from the JamLady in Eagle River.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 06:23 pm:

Upmama, you are too funny. See Mikie, everybody loves you so don't fret. One of these days you'll get on here early enough. Race ya!!!!!

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 08:49 pm:

How do you get the "early bird" put on the first post of the day? I have had the 1st posting several times but never got the early bird attached to it. why? how?

Dave, what do u mean that you passed the early bird back? how did you do that?

By JARMO ITÄNIEMI (Japei) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 09:30 pm:

Hello!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 09:40 pm:

Margaret, how about we go hafes (? halfs) and buy the little cabin whenever it comes up for sale. I might even be able to go halfs on a well etc. There was one cabin shown about a year ago here on pasty cam that I really loved. They wouldn't need to worry about me hoggin' the beach and blocking the footpaths for those who love and appreciate the woods. And I hate those big, stylish McMansions. Some people just have too much money and too little love for the UP.

By Carole (Carole) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 09:59 pm:

Kay, trust me the 'little cabin' will not go up for sale anytime soon (but one can dream). And as long as my cousin owns it, it will never become a McMansion. Compared to those huge cottages, the camp has more character. The lake is right across the road, just go down the slight hill and you are on one of the prettiest beaches around. To your left in a distance is Eagle River and to the right is Sand Bay/Clarks Point. There are very few people that walk down along the beach, but it has tons of rocks that is a attraction for rockhounds. Most of the people stop further up the road to hunt for agates.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 10:03 pm:

Anywhere along that beach is good for agates, as well as other goodies ;-)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 10:27 pm:

I'd love to have a little cabin like that right on the lake. You don't need anything majestic when you live on THE LAKE!!!! That place is perfect.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 01:27 am:

I passed the 'Early Bird' back by snail-mail.I don't think it got there as of yet? I assumed it made it back, but ya know what happens when one dose that?Every one thinks the Race is on for morning, but what nobody knows,it has already been WON.........

June 17 th.2004 was my last and only Award recieved for Early Bird.It was the day the Greenstone 2 was pictured. I said back then what the early bird should do with that worn.I still stand strong with that feeling today! For those of you who posted on or before that date knows.

I'am staying up all night singing "North To The U.P. Go North The Race Is On" I am now going to maintain P.C. slience, over and out.( How many old C.B. or ham radio folks now use the PC )?? Can a Poll be taken on here?

I know who is going to win/I'am going 10/7

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 01:32 am:

Oh and Carole; thank you for painting the picture with your words-post's,just as nice as both of todays pictured.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 05:38 am:

Kathie Murto Mania; you asked "How do you get Early Bird Award." HAVE you not been reading? The awnser is of course.."U GOT to win it from Deb,"and now I hear she got Mr.Deb! (Money talks)"Conspiracy" Mikie crys out from Berkley.

Geez David, did you stay up all night trying to get the "Early Bird"? Well, looks like you got it but it's on the wrong page. I'll bet you a couple of pasties that Deb or Mr. Deb get it again!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 08:38 am:

What ya mean wrong page, you been bought,go back to bed Joanie, the plot thickens,,,,,,,,,

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 08:49 am:

About three inches here Mikie...we keep just missing the big amounts...

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 08:54 am:

Yep, the plot sure thickens - - - it's a Pasty Conspiracy!
Looks like Da Bears are gonna be playing in lots of snow! We've got a couple of inches here in Illinois, yipppppeeeeee!

By Randall Ollila (Rancher) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:37 am:

Morning All.
I was quietly lying in wait ready to pounce on the Early Bird but was distracted by a phone call from the sweety.
>Joanie< Gonna have to cheer for New Orleans this day even tho I like the Bears.
Enjoy the day everyone!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:40 am:

Randall, I'm with you. Am cheering for NO also. They have a Big Ten QB as well as NE who I'm also cheering for. It's nice to see two Big 10 QB's in the final four teams. Plus the Bears have Brian Griese too. What a conference!

By Randall Ollila (Rancher) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:45 am:

Can't wait for EB, need to fix breakfast.
NO & NE in the SB!!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:46 am:

"Acording To Jim" The Bears will win,so that's the team i choose to win..24/9.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:47 am:

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, we all get the "Early Bird" today!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:48 am:

Hope you're right David!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:50 am:

Again, I'm with you Randall. The News in the Super Bowl. Two Big Ten QB's facing off against each other. YEAH!!!!!!!!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 09:59 am:

Since it's going to be a Sunday those who Pray-Pray that it's over soon, with a big Bears win,and may the early bird who gets the worm, don't choke on it.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:03 am:

Okay David, I'll go for that. I have to go and start cutting stuff up for pasties now so I'll leave chasing the early bird to the rest of you. Good luck!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:07 am:

Yummy Deb's making pasties, party at Ron and Deb's house!! We're heading to Minnesota, you guys can have the worm, I'd rather have a pasty!
Oh, oh, one problem, I can't party at Ron and Deb's and root for Da Bears. Hmmmm, let's see----pasties, or Bears, sigh!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:12 am:

Ya all come here and watch it on a 108 inch new Sony HD TV.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:12 am:

Joanie, You can come over. We don't care if you root for the bears. There are many times there are people here rooting for different teams than we are. Come on over. You can meet my boys!!! I'll have plenty for everybody. They're going to be VERY good!!!! Better than anything you can buy any place. Once you have home made, you don't want store bought.

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:16 am:

Go for the pasties!

Saints by 10 so you might as well take the pasties (like there is a real choice between pasties and Da Bears?)!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:16 am:

Do you put Rutabeger in um, and if so how much? I get heartburn bad.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:19 am:

David----SHOW-OFF!!!! LOL

Tim, Well said!!!

I do put rutabaga in them. I put steak, rutabaga, carrots (just for color), onion, salt, pepper and a slab of butter for moisture. They're delish!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:24 am:

But Deb...the real question...Lard or Crisco in the crust?????

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:25 am:

Next time use Bacon for moisture, Deb...

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:25 am:

Man that;s shorting!!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:26 am:

Tim, Crisco!!!! And I've never used bacon but it's a thought. Thanks. Hubby loves bacon!!

By Randall Ollila (Rancher) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:27 am:

What in the world is 'Rutabeger' ?
Deb S I wouldn't care if you are watching Ballet to have Hmde Pastys!!!!! Alas I am not able to travel with Sweetie being in New Orleans I have to stay home and be Cinderfella for the week. Making Stew today for the halftime gang.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:31 am:

The Bear's will eat Pasties like NO tommorow !

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:36 am:

I spelled it wrong it's like a Turnip that the Bears are eating later on.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:37 am:

Rutabaga is an orangish color veggie that is used for stews, boiled dinners, pasties and some even mash them like potatoes (though I hate them like that). It is like a turnip. It adds a sweet flavor to stews, pasties, etc.

I've never used lard though my mom used to. My husband makes the crust (he used to be a baker and does a much better job than I could ever do) and he says he's always used Crisco, so crisco it is.

Okay Randall, who is Sweetie? You're a good guy to agree to being Cinderfella. Wanna come over for pasties? One of my sons just cancelled out on us so there'll be plenty. We got a dusting of snow and he doesn't want to drive the 45 miles. It's for pasties for crying out loud! Whatever!!!!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:38 am:

Go da Bears !!!!

My wife is from Illinois and a Bears fan, so with the Pack out of it, we now go for da Bears.

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:43 am:

I use Crisco too...I was just wondering...

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:44 am:

Deb, I am thinking of driving the six hundred from sunny bright Berkley for a pasty.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 10:49 am:

Come on Mikie. The more the merrier. I'm making chocolate chip bars (easier & quicker than cookies) for the kiddies too.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 11:03 am:

Maybe I can talk Dani into making pasty soon, I am making some brownies for Tim as soon as I get out of the office. Precious just offered to take me to breakfast and I turned her down since I am not ready and wont be for at least an hour.My daughter Dani makes the best pasty I have had. Both daughters learned from my Mom how to make the pasties. Makes me feel good to have kids that I can brag about. Now Andrea the Irish dancer has to learn how to make them.

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 11:16 am:

The greatest gift you can pass on to your kids is the art of making a pasty! https://pasty.com/pcam/albuw49

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 11:23 am:

Tim I like the pictures of making pasties, is that your son? By the way Gizmo is only half the size of Jimmie the fat white cat. We have had animals as long as we have been living here. Max the Yorkie, and Jimmie the fat white cat are the only ones that I liked the others were Precious's not mine.
