Looks like Rob Wetton has a favorite spot in Houghton from which to view the folks on the other side (in Hancock). What a striking difference night and day makes. Of course the nightlife picture is a bit more to the right than the daytime photo, and the glow of the evening lights give the town an ethereal effect, almost celestial-like. The daytime image is pleasing to the eye also, in a more informative way. You can pick out local landmarks through the trees, such as the old Portage View Hospital building.

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Both pictures are beautiful. The top picture gives me a feeling of peace. Have a good day everyone.

Good Morning All!

Two beautiful, but COLD, perspectives. Hmmm.... I think I'll have a cup of Hot Chocolate! ;)

I can't wait for the Winter Festival in February at MTU. This is my son's Sr. year at MTU and I haven’t made a Winter Festival yet. Your pictures have me excited about attending this year. Plus I can learn out how he uses our clothes iron. It sure isn’t on his clothes! :o)

By Nona Warren Mi. on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 09:11 am:

good morning. Great pictures. I really enjoy the pictures from the beautiful Copper Country. Looking forward to watching the ice sculptures be created.

Happy Belated Birthday to Bea from Lindell's !
Thanks for providing 'refuge' to us teenagers for such a long time !!

By maijaMI on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 09:57 am:

I also can't wait for Winter Festival. The snow buildings are absolutely awsome.

I think Jason Plichta is setting up web cams so we can watch some of them being built, because all of the tech motion cams are now still pictures.

For those of you used to ice sculptures, these snow sculptures are a whole different thing, which I don't think happen anywhere in the world except Houghton. If you can't come up, check out the Tech web cams!

GREAT PICTURES!

By UP dreamer stuck in NJ on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 10:08 am:

Boy, are those pictures beautiful. I am desperate for snow, but unfortunately they're only forecasting rain here in Jersey. :-( I am SO tired of listening to people here complain about the "cold"...I envy you your weather!

By Norma in Midland on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 10:15 am:

Does anyone know the exact dates of Winter Festival? I know we cannot get hotels, but we could stay in Little Betsy? Thanks!

By Gordo in GR, Mich on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 10:40 am:

The Winter Carnival runs from Feburary 10-13. Check out www.mtu.edu for more information and pictures from the 2004 carnival. VERY IMPRESSIVE! :O)

Dates of Winter Carnival February 9-13th

http://www.mtu.edu/carnival/

Although the 2005 schedule is not posted yet on the MTU website, but keep checking back, it should be posted shortly.

As Michigan Tech is a technical institute, sometimes terminology is an important issue (and so you mom & dads look kewl) At Michigan Techs Winter Carnival the students make Snow Statues.

For those of you un-initiated a few of the must see events are walking around on "All Nighter" night, that would be Wednesday the 9th. And the "Skits" are a hoot (if you have a stomach for sarcasm, innuendo, UP humor, they also sometimes mock Yoopers, but in a loving way). Skits are usually on Thursday, two showings, typically 4pm & 8pm. Go to the 4pm because 8pm can be kind of .... let's just say.... not family oriented.

As a Tech Grad (Toot) who participated in Winter Carnival every year 1981-1986, and been back many times, it never ceases to amaze me at the ingenuity & results that are obtained by the students/staff/community. The local community really benefits!

Hope you all can get to Winter Carnival to be amazed by the Snow Statues...it's really something to see!

By Norma in Midland on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 11:19 am:

Thanks for the information. I hope we can come up. I have not been to Winter Carnival since the early 70's.

Correction #2 .. from the MTU calendar:
"MTU Winter Carnival:

Thanks for all the great pictures of the UP. I'm so 'home'sick for it. My home is now in the GR area, but my heart is still in the UP.

By Jim B- Milwaukee on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 04:45 pm:

Its sure nice to see all of the great pictures lately!!! Makes a person really homesick.

Maybe it has been mentioned before, but Eric Frimodig(Toni's Country Kitchen)is featured in the February-2005 issue of Midwest Living Mag. Pretty nice article about Yooper life!!!

By Tracy from New Jersey currently in Calumet, MI on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 04:58 pm:

Hey those pictures are beautiful. I was missin' the snow, while I was in NJ. Came home to the UP for a week, best vacation time I have had. TO UP dreamer stuck in NJ, and Missin the UP from NJ: it is only 20 hours from NJ to Calumet MI. Your only that far away from wintery bliss, trust me!

By Phyllis M, Rockford, IL on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 06:05 pm:

What a great picture today! The only thing to make it better is to pull it up as you are eating pasties from Stillwaters! My husband and I had won George Hite's snow contest for November and what a great prize! Our thanks to George and Charlie at Stillwaters for the great pasties and service! We hope to win again - or even place an order for these. In the past, had had other pasties but these rank #1 - especially with ketchup! Have a great new year!
