maijaMI on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 08:27 am:

beautiful, beautiful picture. A contender for next year's calendar!

Regarding yesterday's notice about moving postings:
I'm hoping the editors will be pretty liberal about what remains on the main page. It's been extremely interesting watching the threads of topics weave through. Also hope there will be little blue messages, "See discussion notes" for those that want to follow that thread. There have been some great postings "this is off the topic, but..." that have sparked some of the comments that so many have said they love: great history, local info, general info. I'm sure there will be guides to discussions as has been done before, but, just a ??: Won't that be even more work for the editors?

By Mr, Bill on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 08:55 am:

Over the last few years, it has been a pleasure to watch a daily post go off 180 degrees, much to the chagrin of the original theme. Especially humorous, is some of the bantering ...

I regret that we have become increasingly controlled in content, as it's OUR privilege to tune out if we're offended, or bored. A 21st century Freedom of the Press?

By Me on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 09:05 am:

Bill~

I think they have a right to control the content. I think it's great that they would open a new discussion forum just for us. Pasty.com is by far the best site for great conversation. I appreciate everything that this site offers. Thanks Pasty.com for all you do.

By Kevin K. Lodi, CA on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 10:20 am:

Mr Bill And MaijaMI,
I agree fully with you. But it seems that our society has gotten to the point that if something offends just one person we change things for that person. It's too bad, because some of the tangents that the post's went off on offered up some very interesting information and side conversations.

By David S. - FL on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 11:50 am:

I have to agree with the policy that pasty.com has instituted, putting the hot-button topics on a separate page. Many, if not most people click into this site daily to get away from the world and national problems that constantly bombard us. For those who want no break from the politics and conflicts, there is a page for you. This site has been and hopefully will continue to be an oasis providing Yoopers and 'wantabees' with a few minutes each day to relax and destress (is that a word?) Thanks

By Mark Gilles on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 12:14 pm:

Can anyone tell me how I can listen to the Lake Linden football game over the internet? I am currently listening to the football huskies here in Lakeland, Florida.

By Allouez Andre@PHX on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 12:25 pm:

To Toivo, Mary, Charlie, etal

I greatly appreciate thaat you keep the focus of this URL on the Yoop's beauty and uniqueness. As this effort spurns threads about its events, history and people. Thank you.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

Mark,

The Lake Linden football game will be starting about 1:40pm on Pasty.NET. The games are streamed in mp3 format, for which we recommend Winamp.

By Twin B; Littleton, CO on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 01:31 pm:

As an almost daily reader (sometimes contributor) of these pages, I am thankful a new format is coming. I appreciate all the hard work it takes to have this site from all of the staff. I'll bet ya'll have had LONG discussions as to how to make everyone happy. Most of us I'd dare say claim the UP as home and take this stuff personally...though not from our efforts. There is so much personal stuff somedays that I can't sort out what some are talking about. I get a kick out of the enthusiasm but it is often just like listenting in on someones private conversation. It's easy to forget others are reading....many others. Just my 2 cents on that.
On another topic, don't forget to click on Pasty.com website awards button to find many great places in the UP with their own websites. That's how I found George's site. With an old family camp there I can go to the great archives and see a photo or two that are particularly special to me. Unfortunately not all sites listed are kept current...and you know who you are....:>) Enjoy the extra hour tonight everybody. And VOTE on Tuesday if you haven't.
Sally

Mark in Lakeland, FL -- I live there, too, & am a native of the Lake Linden/Hubbell area. Are you related to Peter Gilles from the drug store? He was a good friend when I was growing up.

By Mark Gilles, Lakeland, Florida on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 02:19 pm:

He is my uncle, and my father is Michael. Peter lives in Elkhart, Indiana. The Lakes are currently loosing 8-0 late in the fourth. I haven't watched or listened to a game since Coach Warner's last in 2000. Where in Lakeland do you live?

Mark in Lakeland, FL -- I'd love to have your uncle Peter's address. I live in Imperial Lakes on the golf course. My email is: bsheetz@tampabay.rr.com Would love to hear from you, thanks!

By Mark Gilles, Lakeland, Florida on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 03:37 pm:

Yes, it is too bad for the Lakes, I don't know if it will ever be the "Lakes" of old. It makes me very ill to hear the Lakes getting beat. Very hard to replace a legendary coach, but Coach Crouch deserves all the support for stepping into such large shoes. It reminds me of the hockey Huskies, it just has never been the same since the legendary coach of the 70's/80's. Someday, someone will have to replace Coach Crawford in Calumet......good luck to that person.

So let's everybody search the web for animated graphics so we can repost them here, even when we add nothing to the discussions? Maybe the new format next month can have a page for people who feel a need to post graphics such as these.

By J on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 04:42 pm:

I agree with greg.

By yoopertransplant, AZ on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 05:16 pm:

I know I should just walk away and not become part of this.....but I feel like I can maybe make some people think....

people....please! stop it! You should be ashamed of yourselves! I am sure most people that tune into pasty.com are posting things that they feel ARE appropriate, even though not EVERYONE will ever feel that way. How would you feel if you found out Yooper is a 10 year old boy? And you know what...that shouldn't matter. Yooper could be a 45 year old man and still be hurt by nasty comments about something that was never meant to hurt anybody. Why shouldn't he have a right to post something that might make one person smile, even if others don't care for his silly graphics?

Maybe your mother was right.... If you don't have nothin' good to say, don't say nothin' at all. And good doesn't necessarily mean "positive", it means constructive and well educated too.

Everybody has the right to have their own opinion, but remember....things are not often what they seem to be. Every story has a multitude of different sides. People do things for an infinite amount of reasons. You CAN NEVER understand why another person does something because you are not them. Everyone's actions are based upon information that they have at a given point in time. And the more information a person has (ie. the more they learn), the more their outlook changes (or it should). Maybe people should find out WHY Yooper is posting graphics. Maybe then you'd be able to appreciate them.

To most of you....sorry for my moment on the soapbox. I don't normally do this, but this one has me riled! I just don't understand why people have to be so opinionated when often they have so very little to base their opinions on.

By danbury on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 05:37 pm:

I don't care about hallow'een, but even in spite of that got the point about those graphics. So, she/he is posting funny little pix instead of more or less funny (read: otherwise serious) little words. What's wrong with that?

By dave s wisc on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 05:47 pm:

dont cha know ????
everythong has to be serious..there is no time for laughter or humorous, let alone funny stuff.

by the way...where is this other posting area, or when is it ????

Go Michigan State....
That way the Badgers can win the Big Ten

By J on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 06:39 pm:

Like everyone else around here, I was just stating my opinion. Whah, what a touchy bunch. I didn't say I didn't like yooper's posts at all, just not so much. Just an opinion. Guess I'll go and do something a little more constructive than staring at this computer.

By smiley on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 08:08 pm:

There is a simple solution to avoid reading posts. It's to the
right of your page and it's called the scroll bar. Just point
your curser on the downward-facing arrow and speed
through all the messages you don't care to read.

It will lower your diastolic reading- I promise.

By BOO BOO on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 08:20 pm:

with all due respect ..

BUT IT TAKES MORE TIME TO COMPLAIN ABOUT YOOPER'S GRAPHICS THAN IT TAKES TO JUST SCROLL PAST EM RIGHT??

willl everyone just close their eyes and take a few deep
breaths?

By theonewiththeenglishdegree on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 08:39 pm:

Say, I just think of the graphics as a break in the conversation, like reading an article and then looking at an ad. I am jealous, really, wish I knew how to do that! Good for you all that I don't!

By Dave of Mohawk on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 08:45 pm:

I agree with Maija's comment from this morning.

By greg on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 09:11 pm:

To BOO BOO et al-

ref "with all due respect...."

If it was one or two posts, no big deal.

Yes, each of us could "scroll" down but you have to first download the page, then read at least the first part of each of these messages, no?

It should be obvious if someone visits these pages at all, that these little moving graphics aren't a "norm" here. The same would apply to those who seem to need to post personal quips to each other here each day instead of using e-mail. I think it disrespectful to others for people to use this forum this way. I doubt they do so with any malice. Usually people here are tolerant, but when one person finally comments on it, you can bet there are others who agree, as witnessed by the follow up post by J.

I would simply ask others to think of what these daily pages will become if there is no oversite by the moderators or any input from users. I would hope that you grant me the right my opinion, or explain to me what your comment, "LETS BE GOOD" means?

Hopefully all of this will be moot with the upcoming changes.

Happy Holidays to all.

By Ahmeek Cliff Dweller on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 10:07 pm:

greg, I think I understand the message you are trying to convey, and here is another thought: sometimes when you read a post, it may bother the heck out of you, like the graphics do you. However, they may not bother anyone else (how do we know you aren't J?). And 'norm'? What is normal, and who wants to be it? Not I. Likewise, what bothers, say, Yooper, may be something that doesn't even phase you. Those are the times a person just needs to relax and let it go. I believe one of my posts was edited because I didn't let something go that really struck a nerve with me. My niece read the post that bothered me and it didn't offend her.

If this message board is over-edited, it might as well be called the Stepford pasty cam. I totally agree with Mr. Bill and maija, let freedom of speech remain (with editings for REALLY offensive comment). Sometimes the most fun on this web site is the bantering that goes on, like now. Oh, greg, don't read the next paragraph.

Sandstoneprincess, what's up with the "too busy kissing people" comment from several days ago??LOL! Since when is a kiss to one guy "kissing people"?? And furthermore, does Jer know you've said hello to so many gentlemen friends on pastycam??!! Just teasin' ya!!!!

By yahoo in flatland on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 10:44 pm:

Not that anyone cares....
I have mixed feelings about the pending change to pastycam.... I can see both sides of the argument...
About the graphic's: for those of us who have broadband, they are no big deal, but when I am traveling & logon via dialup - sometimes at 26k or less - to a page with those graphic's, it adds another 30 to 60 seconds per graphic to the time it takes to open a page, and that can be annoying, which may be the root of the complaints here today.
I choose to move on & come back to the page when I return home to my high speed connection, but for someone who does not have that option, it can get old, fast.

4 years ago (last election time) a public posting board that I used to visit got really surly the last two weeks before the election. No matter what your political views, this period of time every 4 years seems to bring out the worst in people.
I hope we all calm down after Nov 2nd, no matter what the results are.
HaPPY hALLOwEeN from Flatland!

By John-Canton Mi on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 11:19 pm:

Well, I see only one poster using these things.
Unless it gets out of hand dont see a problem.
A stunning picture today. Thanks

By Yooper on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 11:29 pm:

I promise you will never hear from me again. Sorry about the graphics. So long pasty folks..

By Susan, Fl on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 11:37 pm:

Yooper come back...LOTS of us will miss you. Sorry things seem to have gotten rather snippy today....maybe it's just a bad day for some of us. Please come back. Sometime thing written come across differently than they are meant...hard to tell without the "graphics" of tone and facial expression.

By be nice kids on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 12:11 am:

come on back ..the "others" will not be able to say a thing under the new format..

By Yooper on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 12:21 am:

Yahoo in flatland: Please accept my apologies for making your connection so slow. I didn't think my tiny, little graphics would cause such a slow connection. What do you do when there are photos added throughout the day to the site? Must take you a long time....

Call me sensitive, but all the comments have really hurt my feelings. I never meant any harm nor was I trying to prove ''I knew how to post graphics''. They are just cute graphics that I thought everyone would enjoy. I thought wrong.

By Ms. Katie on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 12:22 am:

Boy, call me dense or dumb but why are some getting their shorts in a knot? I think the few graphs I've seen are clever and/or cute. Hey Yooper, don't let a few people get to you, we'll miss your humor. PLEASE?

By Jim, Twin Cities on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 10:58 pm:

I totally agree with Ahmeek Cliff Dweller. The variety of conversations here is wonderful. It's really like a family. And in what family does everyone agree with everyone else. Let's self edit. Let's not get too far out with personal issues or politics but let's not be too bland either. I kind of think that the Little Betsy conversations got a little beyond the line but I still enjoyed them. And I agree with splitting off the political discussions to a separate list when they get going too much. Let's not give Charlie, Mary, & "Toivo" too much editing to do but let's keep it interesting too. I wish us all luck with the new format.

And now, I hope that the following, while a personal note, may be of slight interest to a few about what goes on in the Keweenaw. (I didn't say quite interesting.)

Ahmeek Cliff Dweller, I hope that your wood splitting went well today what with the price of oil and that you have the same number of digits that you started out with.

By Ahmeek Cliff Dweller on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 12:26 am:

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jim, but apparently Charlie didn't agree with it because it is completely gone, not just part of my post, but my entire post. Wow. I didn't think it was even offensive.

No problem, A.C.D., you will notice your original note is above on this page. For the record, Charlie agreed with your sentiments exactly, and no one found it offensive. We simply moved most of the comments to this page which were unrelated to Saturday's picture.

By pf on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 01:13 am:

Yooper, please stay with us!

By danbury on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 02:51 am:

Yooper/Greg: no further offense intended, BUT:
While I think Greg might perhaps have a point as to the connection speed, I'm with Yooper. Except, sorry, I think you shouldn't be that hurt. I know what it feels like to be turned down for creating some nice, harmless friendly little fun. But if you do that on a platform as public as the internet, you'd better be able to shuck it off, or bully right through it. You know that only cause someone is grouchy about you doesn't mean it's your fault but it might be his, don't you?
(No, Greg, I'm not necessarily saying you're grouchy.)
Hope you develope that ability - I just happen to think it's a really important ability for all of us. Except hermits.

I don't think we should have to apologize for posting unrelated comments like someone did above either. Just try not to exaggerate, and if I am (Ok, with my third post, I feel like I'm on slippery ground), CM"T" will take care of it, and I'll be sorry for the trouble. And post again when I think it's at least acceptable.

By danbury on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 05:57 am:

A hermit with a sense of humor, as I see.:)
Glad you've decided to stay on.
You don't really want me to tell you what to do, don't you?;)

By maijaMI on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 07:31 am:

Oh, Yooper! You were not wrong. I didn't get into the conversation because I didn't like the contention. But I LOVED your graphics! The one with the ghost swirling around the house was awesome! Others have posted little graphics before, but none as cute or as well suited to the time and/or conversation.

Please stay! Sorry, but I don't care if someone has a slow connection--an appropriate or for some reason "good" graphic occasionally would be great!

By Ahmeek Cliff Dweller on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 08:17 am:

Yes, Yooper, you do need to stay, your smiley's bring a smile to most of our faces!

My guess is the new format will be very much like what John Dee has on his site. John had a format similar to this one a while back, but wow, things would get out of hand in a heart beat with some of those hot-headed snowmobilers. Change is usually good, but it does take a while to get used to.

By Thank you.... on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 08:21 am:

...Yooper, for posting more graphics. I appreciate it.

By imho on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 08:31 am:

By Therese from just below the bridge on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 08:35 am:

Yooper, please stay! I have been copying some of your graphics into my own private emails and would miss them.

---Gotta run, another bird hit the window. Takes them half the winter to discover that I dont have a 'fly-through' house. Gotta pull the curtains and put up the snowflake window stickies. Happy Halloween everybody!

By yahoo in flatland on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 08:39 am:

Yooper,
I was NOT offended by your graphics!
I was merely trying to point out why SOMEBODY ELSE might be complaining.
I said "I choose to move on & come back to the page when I return home to my high speed connection, but for someone who does not have that option, it can get old, fast. "
This also applies to when photos are added.

I should have added that I do not believe that these things should stop being added to the daily conversation.

My point was just that many of us (at times, myself included) forget what it is like to be on a slow dialup connection.

I personally do NOT get upset about it, I just come back later.

As for your most recent Halloween graphic; I thought it was hilarious & I should have also stated that in my original post!
Please except my apologies for not making that clear.

I also agree completely with Danbury's 02:51 am post about not taking it sooo personally, when posting in a public arena like this.

Yooper, stay & have some fun!

By ME on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 09:14 am:

Yes Yooper please STAY!! Your graphics are totally AWESOME!! I really loved the Halloween graphics!!! i put them in an email and sent out a Halloween card to most of my friends with it. SO PLEASE STAY!! Who says we still can't have fun!!

By Tom W. on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 09:36 am:

A differing point of view:

graphics -

please don't clutter up these pages with them.

If "ME" and others want them, do a google search for animated graphic images and you will find all you want.

By danbury on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 09:49 am:

That's beside the point.

By Lw Alger co on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 09:53 am:

Yooper -

Your remarks about leaving and not posting any more sounded a bit immature in my opinion. (BUT I see that you DIDN'T stop posting).

You would have seen that you were the only one who posts these things. It then became apparent that these obviously bother some other visitors to these pages. So why do you do it? I mean, it's not like you are the only one who can post them.

This note illustrates why we are separating the conversation into 2 areas, one relating specifically to the picture of the day, and one for other interaction - including animated gif's if so desired.

pasty.com

By Rose on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 10:25 am:

I, for one, think that two areas to post on every day sounds like great fun. One for the photo-of-the day and it's related comments and the "What's Up" page for news of the day, other conversations, snapshots, graphics etc. I see the new page as a sort of scrapbook page for the day. I think this is a sign that this site is expanding, enlarging and improving. It's a great idea!

By Steve,WI on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 10:32 am:

Speaking of what's up? where is my daily fix? No shoebox memory today

Traditionally, Sunday IS Shoebox Memory day, but when it falls on the last day of the month, then the

Dear lw

AND it bothers others that others are bothered by a couple of images!
so.. what do we do about it ....just scroll past em please.
It takes less time to bypass em then it does to debate this.Like some have said it is only one {or} two people! you should have a break now till yooper finds some turkey or pilgrim images!
..yes i admt I am cluttering this sight right now..

By Lw Alger co on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 12:18 pm:

clutterer -

Where did I say that it bothered me?

Let me try to explain what I meant. When I visit a site, whether it be some kind of newsgroup, discussion page or whatever, I read the posts there and check for a faq or acceptable use policy. By doing this, you can pretty easily determine how things work. So if there aren't any little graphics or smiley faces found there, why would you start uploading them. That was my question.

You wrote above: "AND it bothers others that others are bothered by a couple of images!" By this are you saying that nobody should ever post a message that disagrees with another?

Several people (more than 2 I believe) were against the inclusion of graphics here. I didn't see anyone "demanding" the person to stop posting them.

I would like to think anyone can voice an opinion.
By the way, why would you think discussing issues like this is "cluttering"?

By just a thought but.. on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 01:16 pm:

It is not excluded in the FAQ is it.
Charlie mentions above it is ok and the new section is open..so it does not matter now eh.

By Tom W on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 01:47 pm:

Thanks for the new format.

Now Yooper can go for it with the graphics in the 'What's New' section and the other conversations will hopefully be more on topic in relating to the picture of the day.

Charlie, you and the other moderators have much more patience in keeping this place up than I would. My hat is off to you all.

I'm looking forward to next month's Cam Notes pages.

By Yooper on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 02:52 pm:

lw,

It's hard not to sound immature when I am only 14. I had a nasty accident a week ago and have a cast on my arm and leg. I am bored at home and can't go back to school yet. I do get my mom and dads permission to post on here and sometimes they post for me. My mom thinks too much trouble was started here and I have to see if I can post anymore graphics (for the people who like them). I will keep in touch with all of you. Thanks for all the nice people who stuck up for me!

By Yooper on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 02:57 pm:

lw, I was NOT the first to start posting graphics. They were on here before, so it's not like I just starting posting them.

hey

By ME on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 03:06 pm:

Tom this is from ME, this page is just for discussing other things that they don't want on the other picture page and Yooper may display graphics if he likes. If you don't like them ....well that is not my problem. End of subject. THank you for letting me get my opinion out.

By Jimmer in Houghton on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 04:08 pm:

How about those Wolverines?!
(Note: those who know me know that I will say something like that when I really want the discussion to go somewhere drastically different.)

And, how about those Wolverines? I watched the whole incredibly long game on our static-y rabbit eared tv. (Dontcha just love trying to watch tv in the Copper Country without cable or dish?) Even though I consider myself a true U of M fan, I thought we were done when we were down 17 with six minutes to go. Condolences to my fellow State alums (I graduated from both schools).

To keep this to something Yooperish: Wolverines (the actual critters). Does anybody know of any wolverines living in Upper Michigan? I thought that they are not supposed to be in Michigan anymore, but they had a confirmed sighting in the Thumb within the last year or so. I saw a wolverine pelt for sale in Seney this summer. I'm wondering if people are seeing evidence of wolverines in the U.P.? Ya never know. The DNR is finally admitting that cougars are up here.

Go Blue, eh?

I am sorry to hear about your accident and sincerely hope that everything gets back to normal for you. With the new posting area, you can post your graphics for others who like them. I would just offer a suggestion that you don't overdue it, since everything is best in moderation.

I wasn't one who had a particular problem with it, although I'd rather not have had them posted on the cam notes page myself. Since you are 14, you probably haven't been on the internet as long as some people here. You see, the animated gif graphic files have been around for a while and like the blinking text on some web sites, they were perhaps "cute" when they first came out but they were overused to the point of being annoying, in my humble opinion. You are correct that some others were posted a while back but that person stopped when someone commented about their use.

I also applaud you Mom who apparently cares about you to monitor what you do on the web. Good for her!

Happy Haloween to all.

No luck so far, Jimmer!
But then, guess this has ended anyhow, more or less.
Only 'cause someone down-posts doesn't mean one has to back off - considering laying lower perhaps.
As long as there's no real harm or damage done, minorities shall be tolerated, not kneejerkly pampered.
On a sidenote, the german name for what I think is the wolverine was derived from the norwegian name, being fjellfrass (sp?), i. e. rock cat. However, the word was not translated nor interpreted, but rather phonetically transferred: Fjiellfrass became Vielfraß: Eats-a-lot.
Unconfirmed.
