With the end of November in sight, gray colored landscapes like this in the U.P. are soon to be just a memory. Some folks might say this time of year is colorless and drab, but it opens up the scenery so that you notice things you might not otherwise, like this old smokestack from by-gone days. Katie Keranen first spotted it through a tangled web of branches, but then found a good vantage point to capture the smokestack seemingly rising right out of the valley of bare bushes and trees. I'm not certain where this one is located, so if anyone has any insight into its location, let's hear it!

It is drab this time of year, but every season has it's beauty.

This appears very similar to a stack down in a valley, just off from the Baltic poor rock piles.

Way to go Menominee!!!!! The pride of the UP. U P Power!!!!! U P Power!!!!! LOL Wish I hadn't missed seeing the game on TV last weekend. My son & husband went to the Crystal Falls game at the Ford Field but CF lost. We're still proud of them for making it as far as they did. They had a good year.

What's the stack attached to?

By lz (Llamamama) on Monday, November 27, 2006 - 11:19 am:

Hey, Joanie, is that an "Owe me a dime coke" occassion? Am I dating myself?

This is the Trimountain Mine, looking north from the #4 rock
pile I think. I was just there last month, taking some pictures
and video for my Copper Country Explorer website. The mine
started independently in 1888 and ran into the 20's. From there
Copper Range bought it and mined it into the 30's. Some very
interesting ruins around there make for some good pictures.

Just went to the archives and saw this from December 2004;
When the James River Company wanted to build a mill in the Baraga area in the 70's I read where there were still 17 smokestacks standing in the Copper Country..We had all of that "pollution" and the people still survived......

Judging from where the pic is located in Katie's album, I would tend to agree with Trimountain or Baltic. However, it also looks a lot like some of the Mass stacks as well.....

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, November 27, 2006 - 01:45 pm:

I don't think it's a Mass stack. The terrain is too flat for Mass, but I could be wrong. I was once before.

By Katie Keranen (Yooperkate) on Monday, November 27, 2006 - 03:00 pm:

Both pictures were taken in the woods just behind Trimountain! Down near the tracks. The second picture is taken from on top of the rockpiles out that way, so Mike is correct! There are some other rockpile pictures in my Summer 06 Album in Random Places!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 27, 2006 - 05:23 pm:

Ok!! After looking closer at the bottom picture, I recognize the clearing on the ridge behind the stack as an area I have mapped in the past....

Good job Mike, and thanks Katie ;-)
