The babe in arms in today's photo would be about 110 years old if he/she were still around. I saw a story this morning about a veteran of World War I who was honored yesterday with a medal - and he is 111 years of age, which they said makes him the 5th oldest person in the world.

The setting of today's 1890s Shoebox Memory is the community of Skanee in Arvon Township, about 15 miles northeast of L'Anse. Clyde Elmblad has provided a variety of historic images of Baraga County surrounding Keweenaw Bay, and we've had other photos of Arvon here on the Pasty Cam before. But I must confess, having lived here for 18+ years I've never been to Skanee, and would like to explore the area someday firsthand myself.

Something tells me that you live longer and healthier lives in the UP. Looking at the pic, life sure was different back then.

I love this picture. Could someone tell me where the name L'Anse comes from.

Le Once (L'Anse)

One of the most common terms found on the old French maps of the Great Lakes is "Anse" (often spelled "Ance"), the meaning of which is "cove", or "inlet". As is indicated by Hubbard's rendition, Americans' often mispelled the French words they obtained from their voyageurs. "L'Anse" means "The Cove".

Love the picture. Is anyone working on the bridge cam? Miss seeing all of the weather changes in the UP.

Can't pullup this last weeks pics anymore -says that page no longer available? Gone forever or just misplaced? That would not be good - if you miss a day, you REALLY miss a day.

The problem was quickly located and resolved.

Never been to the Skanee area Charlie? The area is beautiful especially around Huron Bay. The color in the fall on the back roads and the Huron Mountains region are a sight to see. The area is wide open for snowmobiling in the winter and the fishing is great. There is also fine camping at the mouth of the Huron River with a great view of the Huron Islands, at Big Erik's Bridge and at Witz's Marina & Campground. Well said, Clyde! Witz Marina and Big Erik's are favorite spots of mine. The marina is so picturesque: none of those big, expensive sailboats there. The sunsets are magnificent. I'm located on Keweenaw Bay, but Huron Bay is quieter and very enjoyable.

I'm going to make a point of going there next summer. I haven't
been there for decades. Sounds delightful. The last time I went, I
went with my dad and he visited an old friend.

I've been close to Skanee a few times but never been to the actual town. My dad has a buddy who lives there that he talks to on the cb radio often. I think that guy lives in BFE though away from everyone.

Pequaming on the map above looks like an island in the bay that fill was added to connect to the mainland. I wonder if at one time it was an island if the lake levels were way uplike maybe after an ice age?

Boy I can't imagine going for mail or groceries is such get ups. Such voluminous hats and skirts! They look lovely but I'll take jeans and a top anyday!:>)

What you are referring to Allen in regards to Pequaming is called a tombolo. A tombolo forms when wave refraction around around the island shapes the beach into a cuspate foreland that eventually extends to the island itself.

In other words, waves carry sediments around to the backside (shoreline side) of the island and deposits it in that area, eventually to the point a "land bridge" forms between the island and shore. This is what has happened at Pequaming.

What's interesting is that in time, Pequaming will be an island again because Lake Superior is advancing on the US shoreline and receeding on the Canadian side.....

Witz family had roots to Jacobsville.

Skanee is a beautiful area. I loved the falls near Big Eric's Campground. There are other falls in the area too, but many are on gated or posted property. It would be great if the Nature Conservancy, or some other organization could work some of their "magic" and open up more of the property in that area to the public. I don't remember seeing any public access to the big lake east of the Arvon Twp Park.
