The Keweenaw has so many inland lakes it would be quite the task to start counting them all. One of the more recognizable ones is on M-26, when you make your way north to Copper Harbor. It's Lake Medora and thanks to Dotty Kinnun we get several views of her, both up close, looking at a natural barricade of sorts and also from afar, looking towards one of the little islands that dot this lake. You can just make out the subtle beginnings of the color change in the leaves. It looks like fall is on its way!

Those are such wonderful pictures. I just love the Keweenaw. The fall colors will be fabalous when they finally arive.

I've caught many smallmouth there in our many vacations to the UP. Beautiful lake, few boats, good fishing and GREAT scenery!

Can't wait to see the color next month.

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 07:53 am:

I think the colors are earlier this year. Don't wait too
long if you plan to visit from afar to see the leaves.

I hate to disagree Mary, but isn't Lake Medora on US-41???? :P

Good spotting Capt. Paul, I just did that to see how many were paying attention! ;->

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 08:16 am:

It is on us-41 Capt Paul. I know because I hardly ever see that lake as I love the scenic drive on M-26. Sorry Mary!!!

Color is way early here in motown area also. We have half trees bright red and half still green.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 08:59 am:

Beautiful picture choices today Mary! Thankyou!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 09:01 am:

half of the same tree--not half of our trees!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 09:20 am:

Lots of browns to oranges and yellows not so much red from Brockway yesterday. Rode our bikes up and took some time to cool down up there. Probably close to 1/3 color from that view. Cloud shadows made for a certain dimness to the color so I can't send a current picture. More green near the lake but the stress of little moisture has some trees turning early.

How tranquil :)

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 10:50 am:

Maija, you train your trees well. I have a pet grape fruit tree. Won't even change color! Just shrivels when it's to dry. Have to bring it in for any temps below 29 degrees too. He's over 30 years old now. Does answer to the name Elmer though. Elmer Gent Tree. He's getting pretty heavy and I'm getting older. Don't know how many more years I can carry him around. He is well traveled. As a sapling he spent his early years in Utah, before traveling to the UP. After some 6 years there most of his formative years were spent in SE Mi. Sustained one major injury when he fell off a pedistal and rolled around on a patio in a high wind. I don't think any alcohol was involved.

Rowdy,
Thanks for the chuckle. I needed it.

By Joe Pio (Joepio2) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 03:46 pm:

I'm blessed with a home on that lake, plan to live there as soon as I retire!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 04:57 pm:

Roudy: you are tooo funny. Give my love to Elmer Gent Tree!

By Therese (Therese) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 05:31 pm:

'Elmer Gent Tree'... That name rings a faint bell...

I just came home with great reluctance from Paradise. Mom pointed out every red-orange maple all the way home through rain. The grey weather just makes the color more vivid. That's as close as I will get to Keweenaw this year; maybe next year I will be camping at Fort Wilkins...

By Bonnie Hartman (Bonniehartman) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 08:21 pm:

Always nice to see a shot of Lake Medora. I lived on the lake year round back in the early 80's. No electricty or running water. Well, running water as long as I went down to the Lake and chopped a hole in the ice, and ran up the slope with the bucket! October was always a beautiful time on Medora

By Bonnie Hartman (Bonniehartman) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 08:22 pm:

Oops, make that electricity!

By Frank Picotte (Frankp) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 08:52 pm:

Minnesota boasts land of 10,000lakes but I do believe Michigan could very well top that mark. Would anyone have any exact figures? Could be interesting.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 09:51 pm:

Frank: Yes really interesting. I've wondered that for years. Heard this discussed for years but never saw or heard any figures.
For starters St. Clair county here has not one lake! I wonder if any other MI county shares this distinction? The adjoining mostly suburban Macomb county, just a few miles away, has quite a few lakes!

PastyCam at it's best.

There is a Remillard Rd. that goes into Lake Medora. Does anyone know what Remillard the road was named after?
