This view of the Houghton County Fair was taken eight years ago -- but it could have been last weekend. Things haven't really changed much -- the same company supplies the rides, the 4H members compete on their horses, and there are exhibits in several buildings. And, just like eight years ago, the closing of the fair heralds the beginning of a new school year. Most Copper Country students return to the classrooms a week from today, Finlandia students return today, and Tech orientation is underway.

Good Morning all! I am back home in Lapeer. My trip to Laurium was wonderful. My brother's wedding was great. Sunday, the family took a ride like we use to as kids....up 41 to The Fort, to Brockway and all around. Lots of pics....
If it wasn't for a doctor's appt. today that couldn't be rescheduled, I would still be there.

By FJL (Langoman) on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 09:07 am:

The picture of the fair reminds me of the carnival held yearly in Calumet. Late 40's and early 50's.It would set up on the open field north of 9th st. across 203. Lived on the corner of E. Cone st. What excitment for a young boy. The feeling always comes back seeing pictures like this. Anybody remember???

We had 11 years of fun family times at our county fair when our daughter showed her 3 horses and ponies and 2 Guernsey dairy cattle, she always brought home the blues, purples, and the Grands!

Good morning everyone :) Loved the county fair, when I lived in Michigan...such great memories. I went home for a day last summer, just to go to the county fair, with some friends. Was well worth the trip to be on Michigan soil and mingle with people I had known all my life ;)
Have never gone to an Indiana county fair...it's just not the same when you haven't grown up with people from that area. Because the best part of a county fair, is running into friends you haven't seen all year, and catching up on old times :)

Debrajean, Congrats girlfriend :) I am so proud of you for accomplishing your dream of living in da UP. Woooooooooooooo hoooooooooooooo!

You'll be in da UP by past cammer Bruce Jackson...you'll have to stop in the animal shelter in Ironwood and say 'howdy' to him, from all of us.

So when are you moving? Bet you can't wait, eh ;)You'll have to give us daily "Debrajean's first UP winter" reports :)

Hopefully I'll be moved to da UP within the year, and we can get together :)

Way to go Debrajean! My brother lives in Kingsford and has lived there for quite some time. He likes it but says it sure ain't the Copper Country. At least he's in da UP, eh?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 10:27 pm:

Well, you folks have written messages about many topics the
past month. It was interesting how many of the places you
wrote about that I was actually out to see. Misery Bay and Agate
Beach--I saw both places for the first time ever. I am convinced
that the beach at Misery Bay is one of the best I've ever seen. I
need to consult a book to see if any of the rocks I lugged back
from Agate Beach are actually agates. I finally saw Toivola where
Toivo hails from. Loved the Heikkinen School and the
interestingly shaped barn. Blueberries were not plentiful in
Marquette County but my dad still managed to pick 87 quarts.
Blackberries were abundant. Any recipes for blackberry jelly? Or
viili starter? Too bad about Lindell's. I've never been there.
Maybe next summer. I saw "Fire and Ice" and finally know about
the Molotov Cocktails. I made hollyhock dolls too and my
daughter, who just mortgaged herself to the hilt on a house in
National Mine is planning to put some hollyhocks in her garden.
I visited loads of the Father Baraga sites. I had a great time in
the UP and wish I were still there! Cudos to Debrajean and
Sur5er who are about to move UP!

Debra Jean, Congratulations! I am looking forward to finally being able to taste some of your famous Stuffed Mushrooms!

(and working with you too :) )

Welcome to Norway!

FJL: I remember the carnies in Calument. Then they moved down to Lake Linden.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 02:38 pm:

DebraJean...Best wishes on your move to the UP. Iron Mountain is a great town full of fun loving folks. There is a large Italian community there and they are a hoot!!..(Tom Izzo and Steve Mariuci are "favorite sons")....There is much less snow there in the winter and it is warmer. There are two lovely inland lakes in town and Spread Eagle is a beautiful resort-like area just outside of town. You'll be about an hour from Escanaba...less than 2hrs from Green Bay...and about 3 hours from the Copper Country. WELCOME to the UP.....
