Today's look at 1998 is a view of a portion of the village of Calumet from the top of Swedetown hill, where that old watertower still stands.

Around what month does the trees start turning colors in the UP? I am making another return to the UP on Labor Day weekend and just wanted to know if the trees are turning colors by then. I spent two glorious weeks in Marquette, Houghton, and Hancock during the first two weeks of July and it was BEAUTIFUL. I was told to pack for cold weather, but instead the weather was FANTASTIC- I got a great tan!!

The best bet for maximum fall colors in Houghton & Keweenaw counties is generally the first two weeks in October.

Watch this space for twice weekly foliage reports from September through November: The Foliage Network

Until the reports start up for this year you can click on a region (e.g. Midwest United States), then scroll down to the bottom of the page and browse through the archives dating back to 2001.

The colors are already beginning to change a little--more so than other Augusts. But I still think it'll be the first two weeks of October. Last year we were UP the first weekend, which was the end of Sept. and the beginning of Oct. We were a week or less too soon. I'm going to try to hold myself back this year and go the second weekend in Oct. We're up once in June, July, August and color tour time, and that's the trip I lo-o-ong for.

Today I finally got around to spending a little time on the Soo Locks webcam site. If you haven't explored the site, you should. The movies are hilarious -- the big freighters come flying in, the lock fills up (or empties) and then it zooms off. Wish I had had this site years ago when I tried to teach some youngsters how a lock works; it's a lot clearer than colored chalk and a chalkboard.

We have a maple tree at the end of the driveway that has one branch that's on the south side that changes way earlier than the rest of the tree. It's been red now for a couple weeks. The 3rd crop of Golden Dell Dwellers (dandelions) is already in bloom. Oh well. I can't believe that the UP State Fair is already done. Labor Day is fast approaching. Where did the summer go?

Yesterday, I drove through Minnesota and Wisconsin and it felt a bit like fall....there were cat-tails along M-35 by Marinette and Escanaba......it was a beautiful summer and I hate to see it leave....:o(....but fall is so beautiful, and even winter has it's beauty.....especially in the UP...:o)
