Good morning :)
First Post

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 07:16 am:

Oh my gosh, I am the first poster of the day :) Up bright and early this morning and headed to the St. Joseph River in Michigan to do some pontooning :) Something about Sundays...the river...and pontoon boating that always remind me of Sundays in the summer in Michigan ;)

By jmac (Jillann) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 08:23 am:

Sur5er
Hope you have a wonderful day pontooning!

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 11:12 am:

Sur5er, wish I was going pontooning with you. Went on one on time years ago. When we were kids, on Sundays after church we would "go for a ride" after dinner . But just on Sundays mom was off. Nurses have to work every other weekend. So we'd ride out to Oconomowoc or Pewaukee up to some lake and swim at a public beach (this is near Milwaukee)Then on the way home we'd stop for custard ice cream. Once a summer we'd get a sundae, mine usually butterschotch(sp). I'm on a memory kick today as we went to my 50th! class reunion yesterday back home. Had a nice time.

What a wonderful evening last night to cruise!! The Ferndale fire and police parade was GREAT on Friday night! If anyone is interested, today at 3pm is the Madison Heights police and firetruck parade. It will have new as well as antique fire and police cars, even a few other surprizes, lots of things to do in the Madison Heights Park, (pre parade) for the kids! Enjoy this beautiful cool day!!!

Sur5er, Hooray for you getting the first post of the day! That's great! So, you're going pontooning. Have a great time. Sundays always make me think about when I was a kid. Of course, we always got up early for Church. After Church we'd head to grandma's for breakfast. She always knew we were coming because it was an every Sunday occurrence. She always had breakfast waiting for us. I was a coffee drinker as a kid (more so than now) and she'd have coffee ready and she'd have either pork pie or head cheese for toast. Oh my gosh, that headcheese on toast and dunked into coffee was wonderful. THEN we'd go to the beach if it was summer. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, as the women in the picture are doing. WE had swim suits on though. Can't imagine sitting at Lake Superior in pants and not being able to go in and test the water. I used to love Sundays. Nowadays I prefer Saturdays.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 03:12 pm:

I lived with my Gramma, along with my dad and mom and brother. After church on Sunday's we'd stop on the way home at Harvey's Coffee Shop to get the Sunday newspaper. Then as soon as we got home, sure enough it was either fried chicken, mashed potatoes and salad with pie for dessert or it was roast beef, mashed potatoes, vege's from the garden and pie. There was always a game on the TV and then about 5 or so I'd head out for MYF. We had the biggest youth group in town. I'm still friends with a lot of those folks. We do reminise about Sunday's and MYF.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 04:00 pm:

My Dad would take us out on Sundays for a ride in his 1940 Desoto. Most times we would end up on the mountain drive looking for bears. Once Grandma went to close to the edge of the mountain where the chains were between the pillars to pick a wild flower, all the way home we heard my Dad complaining to his Mom about how dangerous it was to go past the barrier. She just shrugged it off and said some thing about what he could do in French. Whenever she wanted to say something the kids shouldn't know it was said in French.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 04:03 pm:

The other thing I remember about was going to my Uncle Irvings house and Aunt Florida serving a delicious desert, and she always had her kerchief on her forehead in the summer, she could be a gang member now.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 06:04 pm:

Martha, those were the days. Our group was big enough it was there it seemed forever. We would get together several times a year for a big MYF dance with all of the MYF kids in our district. I still have a friend that I met through those events and we are very close friends. Kinds makes really rainy days here in Amarillo seem ok.

By 69 TOOT (Flyindamooney) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 05:13 pm:

I just attended the funeral home viewing of the 11 year old boy, the son of a friend of 25 years, who died near Picture Rocks while playing at digging tunnels in the sand dunes. The sand collapsed on him and he died last Tuesday. There are absolutely no words of sympathy to console someone during such a life changing event. Please watch your kids, because no one should ever have to go through a day like these parents are experiencing today. I don't have children, but today at the funeral home will change my life.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 05:22 pm:

69 TOOT, That is just awful. Accept my condolences. I hadn't heard of that and have never heard of anything like that happening while just digging tunnels. Goes to show, no matter how old they are, I guess we can't be too over protective of them, right? Tragedies occur. Tell your friend how sorry I am.

By Martha Kirk (Misschiefie) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 05:32 pm:

Goodness, Margaret, hadn't thought about MYF in ages! So long ago it took me a few seconds to recognize the initials (Methodist Youth Fellowship, for you non-Methodists). When I was little I couldn't wait to be old enough to join, but by the time I was old enough interest in our church had waned and the group had pretty well folded. But I do remember when I was about six getting to go with them on an outing to the small little amusement park near us (Wonderland in Southgate) because my parents were chaperones. My first ride on a Tilt-a-Whirl!
And Mikie, I took German in college because my mom used to do the same thing to us kids when she was talking to her sisters, except in German!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 06:14 pm:

Memories of Sundays for me are going to church in the morning at St Cecilia's & always looking up into the choir for Grandma Cundy & waving. I was so proud that Gram sang in the choir. Guess I felt like she was a celebrity or something. LOL My Mom, sister Janice & I livd with my Grandma Ewen & Uncle Jimmy. Mom came from a family of twelve kids so on Sundays the house was filled with my Aunts, Uncles, cousins & their kids. One of my cousins had about 6 kids at the time. Anyway the house was full of people, noise & commotion. Grandma just took everything in stride. My Mom would cringe when we saw everyone coming through the door. Us kids would roam around, go up to the C&H tracks & up to woods just playing & exploring or just play in the yard. I remember Porgy running into a picket fence one time. Boy, did we run home fast. He needed stitches. Wonder now if he was left with a scar!! Some other times we'd go to my Aunt Florence's farm behind Dollar Bay. We liked to play in their barn rolling in the hay & then checking on all her farm animals. Pigs & chickens They also had cows & they named them after members of our big family. Funny hey?!! And we took pride in which ever one was named after us. We thought that was great !!!!I hated the real cow's milk that they served us from their cows & I refused to drink it. So my Aunt had my own special quart of milk in the refrigerator for me. Guess what it was? The same cow's milk!!! I had no idea then & drank it. LOL

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 06:25 pm:

Cotton, that is too funny. I know I have eaten rotten deer meat when I didn't know what it was too. Made me sick afterwards when I'd find out though. Then I'd be trying not to vomit. LOL

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 06:37 pm:

Sunday afternoons as a kid were the best, especially in the summer when my cousins would be visiting at grandma and grandpa's house. The house would be full! The grown ups would play cards and visit and all us kids would be playing outside. When there wasn't any company, we'd pick up grandma and grandpa and go for a ride. I'll always remember grandpa's cigar smoke made me car sick.

69Toot, I am so sorry to hear about the tragic death of your friend's young son. Nothing in life prepares us for the death of a child...which without a doubt, must be one of the worse heartbreaks in life.
(((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))

In regards to building tunnels in sand...I had seen a special on 20/20 a few summers ago, regarding the dangers of cave-ins/death. Before then...like everyone else...I never knew that such a danger existed. Cannot keep track of the times I took the kiddies to the beach, and the first thing they did was to start digging holes...trying to see who could dig the deepest hole in the sand...not having a clue as to the danger the kiddies were in.

Just wish that signs were posted on sandy beaches to warn others...especially where there are sand dunes...such as where we live.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 06:57 pm:

Well everyone, we had a great time pontooning in Michigan (by Three Oaks), on the St. Joe :) Temps on the River were about ten degrees warmer than here in on Lake...which was 72 degrees.

Even got warm enough for me to jump off the pontoon boat, and into the St.Joe...to baptise myself with Michigan water ;)

Wonderful memories about Sundays past :) Margaret and Martha, your memories of MYF reminded me of CYO (Catholic Youth Organization). Bonding moment here with Martha...because my oldest sister was in the CYO, and I couldn't wait to be a teenager so I could join...but by the time I was a teen, the CYO no longer existed.

Remembered when my dad drove the church school bus for a CYO trip to Irish Hills, when I was about six years old. What a great time we had. I always remember that CYO trip to this day, whenever I go to Irish Hills :)

Cotton, whatcha mean you didn't like fresh cow's milk. ROFL. When we lived in Michigan...once a week, I had to drive all the way out to the dairy to get farm fresh milk for my daughter. She had an intolerance to milk...but could digest hot cocoa, (it breaks down something in the milk when it is warmed and sugar is added). Anywho, child had to have her fresh milk from the farm for her hot cocoa...she just wouldn't drink store-bought milk ;)

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 08:40 pm:

I am late getting on here today and it seems everyone is reminscing. Deb, you are the only other person I know outside of our family who ate head cheese. My Mom made it and it was great. We liked it on saltines to. We usually just had the Pork Pie at Christmas.

Mikie, we took rides often on Sundays too.My Dad would put $.50 worth of gas in our old buick and we would head off.My Dad used to just love to ride around and explore .Often tho we used to go to the Mountain Drive.I remember when they had those wires between the concrete things. My Dad would park too close to them and it scared my Mom. I always worried that we would run out of gas cause we would be gone for hours. Never did tho so I guess he knew what he was doing. LOL

Cotton, Your house sounded like ours!! People all over the place. There would be like 10 cars in our driveway. You would have thought someone either died or got married.LOL Usually after the older kids got married they would come home with their kids for Sunday dinner. Lots of good memories:)I had to laugh at you having a cow named after you and being proud.Well I can top that my Dad had 3 pigs one time and they were named after my 2 girlfriends and I. We were impressed!!! It sounds like we all had pretty good childhoods. Fran

My folks were from Menominee, and we ate head cheese. I couldn't now, tho. Ugh!

Hey girls, I'll invite you over to our house sometime for pork kidneys. They are good!!!!! We get them whenver our neighbor butchers his pigs. He saves us the kidneys. I take out all the veins in the kidneys then I slice them. I soak them in a pan for awhile.Drain the water then add more water for soaking. I also rinse them over & over & over many times to get the •••• out of them. I put them in a large pot & boil for awhile. Manwhile I put bacon in the pot with a little oil & an onion,Brown until the onion browns a little & the onions soften. Add the kidneys to the pot with the bacon. Brown the kidneys & bacon Add water to cover the kidneys. Salt & pepper them. Simmer for at least 2 1/2 hours. When it is done you thicken with 1/2 cup corn starch & add 1/2 cup water. mix good to make a paste. Add to the kidney mixture. Simmer until it thickens. It is good over toast of we like it over mashed potatoes. This an English dish.
