Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 07:41 am:

Kathy Jennings takes us back to Laurium, Michigan in the first half of the twentieth century - some boys decked out in their duds, ready for school (or church perhaps) as summer vacation winds down.

It's fun to think how old these gents might be today, certainly approaching 100. It wouldn't surprise me if some of these guys eventually ended up at Still Waters, where Pasty Central was born in the latter half of the twentieth century. By the way, thanks to all who had a part in the fund raising effort for Still Waters over this summer. The Home still could use some help to keep up with rising costs and burdensome regulations. If you won the lottery this week (or just have a few extra shekels you could share), I know the folks would appreciate your tax deductible gift.

There's something else you can do online to help support a very worthy service for the elderly in the U.P. Little Brothers in Hancock is coming down the homestretch with their Summer Sweepstakes '06 fundraiser, where you just might be the lucky winner of a Ford Mustang GT Convertible.

Speaking of back-to-school, we welcome all of the returning Michigan Tech and Finlandia students. Looks like another beautiful day in store for the Copper Country.

Have a good week :o)

Hey, we've got a 'live' BridgeCam today! Thanks!

Well, I guess I should say an 'updated' BridgeCam as it now seems to be stuck again!

Kathy....Do we know anything about these young men?..It would be great if we knew what their names are. My family is from Lake Linden so I know these are not my Uncles. The two boys on the right appear to be twins or brothers so maybe it is one family. Very handsome trio......great picture!!

Cute boys!

By Kathy Jennings (Kathyj) on Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 02:11 pm:

What a nice suprise to see my photo here today!
The two boys on the left are my father (center)
Charles Hirsch and on the right is his brother Hubert. Both have passed away. Hubert died shortly after this photo was taken. The young man on the left was a friend of theirs and appears other family photos. I have also seen these same three boys in photos in Chris Koskinemi's album and suspect the boy on the left is his relative (?).

we are planing a trip to the copper country and would like some help on when the peak color time will be.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 05:50 pm:

Margaret: Why are you giving the definitions of your words? In your classroom, don't you give your students a word to look up so that it will mean more to him/her to look up that word verses to be given the answer the easy way. I think a student learns more if they have to work for the answer.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 05:58 pm:

Beverly, I agree, Margaret has enlarged my vocabulary by two fold. Wish I would have had a teacher like you when I was in school.

Beverly and Mike, maybe some people don't have dictionaries or maybe have a hard time looking stuff up?

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 06:35 pm:

Check out Reader's Digest WordPower; you can get 20 at a time.

Also www.dictionary.com -- my favorite because they check several dictionaries. You can also subscribe to word-of-the-day.
