Everyone has their own idea of the perfect way to spend the day when on one of the many lakes located in the U.P. Thanks to John Ponchaud, I get to show you two of my favorites and they're both on Fortune Lake near Crystal Falls. When I'm in the mood for quiet and relaxation after a long week of work, work, work, I opt for a scene like the first shot -- rowing quietly out to my favorite fishing hole, lowering a worm into the depths of the water and patiently waiting for that slight tug on the line telling me I have a bite. But then there are times when the wild side of me comes out and I want to just roar around on the water, like the fellow in the second photo, throwing caution to the wind!
Editor's note: Professional driver over a closed course. Please do not try this at home. 8^)

Morning All
-Toivo- Please define 'Professional' in yooper speak, cause the guy in the 2nd photo looks anything but professional, more like living his dream of capturing the 'Gold Cup' of power boat racing. Anyway would rather be doing either of the above activities than looking out at the RAIN here is SE MI. Enjoy the day everyone!

A plaque that I saw at the U.P. State Fair said something like, "It's better to be sitting in a boat, thinking about God, than sitting in church, thinking about fishing!"

hinterland: The land directly adjacent to and inland from a coast

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 04:46 pm:

The word "hinterland," like many words in the English language, actually has several denotations and connotations. Margaret is correct about one of the word's denotations. Others include "a region remote from urban areas" and "a region lying beyond major metropolitan and cultural centers."

The geological definition is "An area bordering an orogenic belt on the side away from the direction of overfolding and compression."

The word is often associated with a negative connotation suggesting the people of the hinterlands are backwards, vulgar, uneducated, and lacking in refined culture.

But, not today. They are the smart ones away from the major metropolitan and cultural centers and in a region remote from urban areas, orogenic belt on the side regardless. What is that orogenic belt anyway--something to eat?

Oooh Margaret - lost your dictionary?

Hei Randall, maybe he would look more 'professional' if he was wearing a brain bucket, 'eh? He's having too much fun to be at work.

It's german, by the way. Refers to anything beyond the actual point or place of reference, be that a coast, town, landscape, whatever. Literally translates as backcountry, though it seems to interprete as some things slightly different.

heh... the guy in the second photo is "your's truly" John Ponchaud. and that's a 1959 Alumacraft model FDR 14 footer ( very rare)
with a 40 h.p. Johnson outboard.
She's a very stable craft and LOTS of fun
to slip through the water in.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures :-)
