The Michigan House, seen here from the corner of Sixth and Oak, has a long history in the village of Calumet. Eight years ago, when this picture was taken, the establishment had just reopened under new management. Today you can get lunch, dinner, espresso, and even a room upstairs (and they make a great panini, too).

By Gloptmike (Gloptmike) on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 09:02 am:

Dean,
I would have to say the picture was taken from the corner of Fifth Street and Oak.

Gloptmike (Gloptmike):
I think you're right ... if 'twas taken from the southeast corner of 6th and Oak, looking west toward those spires of St. Pauls at 8th & Oak, that stop sign probably wouldn't be in the picture, never mind the Michigan House, which would be out of the picture to the right!

Where are all the people, that should be on the sidewalks.

I love the Michigan House because my parents went there when they were courting in 1943, and because after my Dad's funeral one October when you had a storm with 40mph straight-line winds and inches of ice-crystal snow and the power went out in all of Calumet, when the power finally came on, the Michigan House intrepid staff went to work and we had a place to eat before retiring. That amazed me, but it amazed me even more that the linemen got the downed line fixed in those conditions. Only in the Copper Country....

This is the most awsome site! my grandparents and Dad were/are Yoopers, and I think it is heaven on earth, reading the comments, especially a thread about what you put on a pasty, were hilarious! I am in search of real viili culture, I purchased one online but it is NOT the real thing, I have milk goats and make my own Juustoa, but would dearly love to be able to make some viili, I have my own honey, and/or homemade goat milk soap I can trade?

Well here I am at 8:32 am Sunday But nobody's home. Would I really be the Early Bird if anybody else was awake and up? Anywho....top 'o the morning all :)

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Sunday, July 30, 2006 - 10:02 am:

The Michigan House is a real asset to the area and deserves to be supported by locals as well as the tourists. Their apple dumpling is worth the drive! With the Vertin Gallery across the street there should be more folks on the sidewalk
crossing the street. I'll be getting my treat there next week!

By Lori Houle (Runnerlori) on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 10:59 am:

To Pam in reference to the viili, I have a start for you. Email me and we can figure out how to get it to you. I clicked on your name, but there is no contact info so I have no way of getting this message directly to you.

By Lori Houle (Runnerlori) on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 11:01 am:

After I signed in to post my message, I clicked your name again, Pam and I got your email address... so you WILL get communication from me after all! :)
