Can you tell this couple loves pasties? Jerry and Katie Goodell were just heading back home to Florida eight years ago, having served the past 5 weeks as camp workers here in the Copper Country.

Allison P - to answer your question from yesterday... I was born & raised in Menominee, from there spent 5 years in Marquette attending NMU before moving south to Oshkosh where I've been ever since. My parents & extended family are all still in the U.P. and I'm lucky enough to be able to visit often. And You?

Cal, I married a Finn from NYC and we both fell in love with copper country our 1st visit 14 years ago. 11 years ago we bought a 1927 log cabin on Rice Lake and have been restoring it to being truly "Paradise"! We spend the bulk of our summers and every winter vacation we get up there!

Can someone translate what 'sur5fer' wrote, or tell me what site I can go to translate from another language to English? Thanks!!

Carole (Carole):
"Can someone translate what 'sur5fer' wrote..."

I'm working on it, but my head still hurts from the one from yesterday!

Kinda like when I was a young 'un and my parents switched to Finnish when wanted to exclude me from the conversation... Of course as a result you just know which bits o' Finnish I learned!

Someone? Anyone? Mebby it's a secret code -- we're not supposed to know :-)

Here's what I have so far (very rough guess):

Quote:

Teidän Suomalainen on iso!
Your finnish is great!

Of course iso can mean: big, large, great, tall, strapping, voluminous, or gross, so that could mean: Your finnish is gross! (You see why I have a headache?)

Sur5er,surely that message is not meant for me,a good old hunky! I know 2 words Da and UP:) Fran

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 09:32 pm:

I dont know a lot of finnish, but there is something in there about old ugly curtains or drapes or something to that effect.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 10:25 pm:

Fran, When I saw FRNash's translation to my Finnish post yesterday, I thought it was you, Fran...got yours and FRNash's screen names mixed up ;)

Pennie, Yepper depper...Jim used my pickup truck to hit up some garage sales while I was in da UP. Among his 'finds' were some awful drapes that he 'redecorated' the house with. Took those puppies down and over to the dump today where they belonged, while he was on the road :) OMG.

Anyone hear the Eagle Harbor lady call in on NPR's Splendid
Table on Sunday? They are planning a French meal for her
son's rehearsal dinner and I want to be invited if they follow
through on the menu suggestions.

My brother's R.D. was pasties!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 11:50 pm:

Sur5er:
Whew, that explains it!
That was way beyond my limited "Finnglish" abilities.

I did get the basic drift of it, something about "carting to the dump some unsightly curtains/drapes that Jim found at a garage sale in the UP", but no way could I do a literal translation.

I did learn a few new bits, however... "minun äänirasia trukki - my "cartridge" truck ... is a pickup truck.

But in general I was in way over my head. ... So far over my head that I was having visions of Israel using "Finnish Codetalkers" to send secret messages via Past-E-Mail in their current dust-up with Hezbollah - as the US used the Navajo Code Talkers in World War II (and as in the 2002 action movie Windtalkers!

Ahaa ... the makings of a Tom Clancy novel?

You and your curtains sur5er. I would have thrown them in the garbage a long time ago. Not even let them in my house.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 09:40 am:

Su5er, We also have a problem with old drapes maybe we should try to get rid of them. Mine came from Switzerland, and are very old and decrepit, Precious got them either from Bootjack or Lake Linden at a garage sale, they are just plain ugly and very boring to look at.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 10:36 am:

Mikie,
It must be a country thing...but I don't use drapes...could never stand the things. I mean, why have windows if you're gonna cover them up, eh. Drapes are too dark and drab, if you ask me. Anywho, if our drapes were in an ugly contest, I bet the ones Jim picked up at garage sales, would have won.
Bev, the only way Jim got those ugly drapes in the house was because he got them when he was home alone and I was in da UP...then I had to wait all this time for him to go on the road, to dispose of them :)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 11:07 am:

I would say some more but I don't want to be accused of conversing too much about drapes.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 12:20 pm:

Mikie,
We're talking about what happened during my UP trip. You see, I was going to take my pickup truck to UP...but I decided against it, because my friend's daughter-in-law was bringing her little one..and in pickup trucks you have to turn off the airbag if you have a child in the passenger seat...and for safety reasons, I don't like either idea.
So I took da SUV to da UP and not da truck...which was a good thing, because when we pulled up to the cabin, my friend's ball joints and suspension went on the front end of her car..and we would have had a heck of a time fitting all us of in my truck.
However, this left da truck in the hands of Jim...who loves to go to garage sales, in his free time. And with me in da UP, he must have had a lot of free time on his hands, to hit up a lot of garage sales...and my pickup truck to haul it in, to boot. Sigh.
When I got home from da UP, I walked in the house...and Jim had 'redone' every window in the house with some of the most awful drapes he had found at garage sales, while I was gone. I think Elvis Presley who was into all the velour stuff would have snubbed his nose at these drapes, they were so ugly.
So that was my UP trip. I got 'new' used garage sale drapes. Sigh. Next time, I go to da UP, I am hiding the keys to my truck, because Jim can't garage sale with his motorcycle...or at least I wouldn't think so.
