What better way to end the week than with this spectacular sunset from eight years ago.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 07:28 am:

First PostGood morning, it looks like it would be a beautiful day to pick blueberries.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 07:33 am:

That is an awesome sunset picture. Who is the photographer?

Edit. note: The photographer of this, and almost all of the early Pasty Cam photos, is Jonathan Hopper.

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 08:05 am:

Depends on which way you are facing, Deb!

Have a GREAT weekend all!

I just spoke with my dad who is in the UP. It IS
a good day to pick blueberries (Of course,
from his perspective, every day is a good day
to do that!). He's picked 66 quarts so far but
feels that this is not going to be the best year
for blueberries owing to the frosts at the end of
May.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 08:26 am:

Kosk, where does your dad pick blueberries? They are really good in my area. I usually go once a week.

I'll be floating in my kayak drowning Night crawlers
on lake medora all weekend ;-)

Any one else onthe lake float by and say hello
I'll be fishing out of a 14 foot yellow 2-man kayak. ;-)

Thumbgardener--He picks in various places
in the Ishpeming area. Where do you pick?

This is like sharing information about trout
streams. In both cases, he parks his car
away from where he is so that others don't
know his real location.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 05:13 pm:

Kosk, I didn't know it was in the UP. I pick down here in the thumb area at a blueberry farm nearby.
Maybe someday I will live in the UP and be able to pick up there.
That's clever how he parks away from where he picks to hide his location. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Anyone been to the blueberry fest in Paradise? It will be going on when we will be up there in August. I have heard that you can pick blueberries on a road near the festival. Any idea how much they charge?

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 05:55 pm:

Are these those wonderful wild blueberries that all of you are talking about?

On a different note, does anyone know when we're going to get BridgeCam back live?

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 06:23 pm:

I do love wild blueberries, but where I go is a blueberry farm. If anyone lives near or visits this area this is a great place to pick. Alot of people drive there to pick that could go to a place much closer for them.
Here is their new web site:

I've been there! How close to Otter Lake do you live? There's an Otter Lake near the Keweenaw, too.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 08:18 pm:

Thanks for the website, Thumbgardener. There are a ton of good recipes on there.

By Carole (Carole) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 08:31 pm:

Marsha or JH: I live in Holly and according to MapQuest Otter Lake is about 40 or so miles from here. I would like to go picking on my day off (Mondays). How long is their berry season.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 08:47 pm:

The ones my dad picks are definitely wild
ones. They made a yummy topping for the
blueberry cheesecake I made for my father in
law*s 90th birthday party last weekend.

By Carole (Carole) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 09:05 pm:

I agree, wild blueberries are the best, even though they are much smaller. And they do make a much tastier pie. But I haven't been to the UP at blueberry time for a few years now so I will have to settle for cultivated ones. I remember as a small girl I would go picking blueberries with my grandparents along the road and into the woods at Sand Bay. We would have a bucket attached to our belts and pick till the pail was full.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 09:15 pm:

Marsha, I live about 10 miles east of Otter Lake. Close enough that I can go about every week.
Carole, they usually start picking in mid July and go until sometime in September. They are open 7 days a week, but if you are driving that far it would be a good idea to call first.
