When you want to get in close to see water droplets sitting on the flora of the U.P., a good place to start is in the Pasty Central Guest Gallery albums. Two names come readily to mind for good close-up viewing: Z-Man and Joyce Tormala.

The pink and white Lady Slipper, in the top photo by Z-Man, has a light rain still clinging to its petals and leaves. These dainty looking flowers are somewhat rare and its said they can take up to 15 years to flower the first time, with the plant actually living for 50 years!

The scarlet poppy bud captured by Joyce in the second photo has more of a heavy rainfall covering of droplets. I like the way they seem to be hanging on to the fuzzy surface of the leaves. With or without the added adornment of H20, both shots are so real, you find yourself leaning closer to the screen to see if they give off a scent.

Beautiful pictures. The second one appears to have very fine thorns.

There is a beautifully-illustrated children's book about the Lady Slipper called Legend of the Lady Slipper by Kathy Jo Wargin. It's one of, I believe, six or seven Michigan legend books written so far. I read them all to my fourth graders every year and they love them.

Bob,
Tell your student his pics of the fireworks in Copper Harbor were absolutely awesome, especially with the Northern Lights showing up. Goes to show Mother Nature can put on a pretty spectacular show also!

Do the northern lights ever appear in august? It is probably a dumb question but I am wondering.

By Dan (Skyking) on Saturday, July 8, 2006 - 01:05 am:

Pennie, Yes the northern lights do show there awesome beauty in august. This is one of my favorite times to vacation to the U.P. and pick thimbleberries.
