First Post

Susan,

And like a sheep, I followed right along.
Still Father's Day was mentioned in the first
post.

Good morning, Just want to say Happy Fathers Day to all

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 08:18 am:

Good morning everybody and a Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there, especially my brother, Tim.

Believe me, I do treasure having my dad with me. I dread the day that he won't be. He had a heart attack a few years ago that scared the life out of us. So, we enjoy them while we can, right?

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 10:18 am:

Just got back online a couple days ago. Noticed the lack of excessive posting and missing posters.... What happened and why?????? Or is it just a temporary lull??

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 12:09 pm:

Happy Fathers Day to all of you Dad's!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 12:30 pm:

FJL Some people were reprimanded about chatting with each other... Thence the lack of posters & excessive postings. Happy Father's Day to all of you fathers out there. Enjoy your day.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 03:07 pm:

Cotton: I don't think people were reprimanded. There was just a reminder to follow the acceptable-use policy. (which among other things states that this site should not be used as a chat room.) We all agreed to that when we registered.

I don't object to the banter, but I sympathise with the editors and their voluminous job.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 06:03 pm:

Maiija...I agree...If everyone would follow the rules it makes for a more pleasent "Yooper" site... Charlie intended for this site to focus on life in the UP. Charlie made the rules and that is it, period, end of discussion. Lets respect his rules and still have fun...

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 07:43 pm:

Might I remind us about another part of the acceptable use policy as well which also states:

"In 2004 we distinguished comments related to the daily picture (Cam Notes) from other miscellaneous conversation in a new feature called "What'sUP". Occasionally the conversation on this supplemental page will include topics other than strictly U.P. related. On the daily "Cam Notes" picture page, please keep comments on the topic, and use "What'sUP" to post other items of interest, such as community event's, suggestions, and general conversation."

Being an outside observer I actually thought that's all that was going on, general conversation. Isn't this the reason why the What's Up page was created, according to the "rules"?? I saw no foul language, personal attacks or anyone propositioning someone like what you would find in a chat room. I think it is great and commend Charlie and the Pasty.net crew for hosting a page where current and ex-Yoopers alike can gather and comment and share ideas on all things UP or otherwise. Does making this strictly a Yooper site mean only people living in the UP should post to it???

I don't want to convey the wrong image as I'm not upset about the warning; heck, I'm probably as guilty as everyone else last week. However, I think to truly enjoy what we have here on this site means not to take things to extremes in either direction.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 07:45 pm:

I have found it refreshing to return to the agreed upon foremat. You had lost me for a few weeks as I had begun to feel as though I was eavesdropping on a private website.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 08:15 pm:

Capt Paul......maybe the two key words are, "excessive" and "occasionally".....(??)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 08:36 pm:

Can everyone bury the hatchet, take a little
extra care with what they post and not turn this
into a battle? I feel that we've had something
good going here for quite a while and would
hate to see it end with animosity and a bunch
of splinter groups. Does there have to be a
them and us?

Why did we start posting here? Mostly, I think,
because we cared about a special place and
the people who lived there in the past, live
there now or yearn to live there in the future. I
still feel that way. How about you?

I know I've learned a lot about the UP from this
site. I have also come to care about the
people who post here and am grateful for the
care and concern that they have shown for
each other.

I hope that soon all of us can be "on the same
page" again.

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 08:48 pm:

To quote kosk in Toronto, "Why did we start posting here? Mostly, I think, because we cared about a special place and the people who lived there in the past, live there now or yearn to live there in the future." I want to tell you all about someone who lives here now who I am very proud of. That would be my husband, who retired yesterday from the U.S. Naval Reserve (Sea Bees) with 20 years of dedicated service to this wonderful country that we live in. There are many from his detachment deployed in Iraq. Please pray for their safe return. Thanks.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 08:53 pm:

Ratherberiding--

I hear you. I will pray for them. I am so happy
that your husband is safe. My son leaves for
Iraq next week and I ask for all of your prayers
for him and all of the other coalition forces
fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 09:52 pm:

I couldn't agree more!! ;-)

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 03:56 am:

What hatchet, kosk? As far as I can see, we're all being nice.

Nah, Capt. Paul, if you're an outsider, I'm offworld ;), yet I'm here, and no one ever asked that to be changed (as far as I know - anyone disagreeing could always get my E-Mail, right?). Being a non-yooper, never-been-there not-american doesn't keep me from enjoying the beautiful photographs and yes, despite the almost complete lack of any personal connection, the postings too, especially the What's Up.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 08:23 am:

Danbury...Gutten Tag....nice to hear from you. I think you are one of us and a sort of "adopted" Yooper!...it has been awhile since I have seen a post from you. How is everything in Deutchland?

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 11:26 am:

Guten Abend/good evening Mary Lou!
Nice to see you:)
Hey, with that post you just made my day. Maybe make that week. Think I posted but twice or thrice this year, and haven't been following all that closely but as you see, I'm still here, or rather, out there.
Germany as of now is hot, humid and busy, even in my little town, with the World Cup. One night I even allowed a friend to talk me into watching a game (SWE-PAR) in a public place which is a miracle since after somewhat around one year in a club, I ****, well, thoroughly dislike soccer. What I enjoyed was the atmosphere - lots of people of various ages and proveniences (tm?)peacefully sitting together, cheering on various occasions depending on temperament. Or that one evening when I gassed up and asked the lady behind the counter who had won that evening's game - prompted a discussion between four total strangers over the relative merits of the german and the other teams.

More typical for my attitude toward soccer is how I found out about Germany winning against Poland: Woke up around 2300 by exessive honking of car horns, yelling and such. Thought, ok, Germany has won, and went right back to sleep.

I've also expanded my take on culture as such in the mean time ... ;)

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 12:40 pm:

Danbury..Way to Go Germany!!!!..but I just bought myself a "Italia" soccer shirt.....only because the pretty blue matched my slacks. Are you ever coming to your adopted UP of Michigan??..I will buy you a pasty from Charlie's place.....so happy I made your day a good-one.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 01:40 pm:

Mary Lou: Am I ever ...
Well, the intention is there for sure (I've even looked at maps, considering routes from NH UP, how long it'd take by motorcycle, and how the Seney stretch will be to ride ...), but currently, and for what easily will shape up to be years, there's just no perspective.

Will, of course, come back to that pasty offer - after following this site for so long, how could I pass on a genuine Stillwater Pasty?
Only one question remains: gravy, ketchup, mayonnaise, strawberry jam, T&E's, ... did I miss an option?

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 02:49 pm:

Danbury....when and if you ever consider a trip to the United States and the UP...consider that most Universities are in recess in the summer and often have rooms available, especially for students. For example our wonderful Michigan Technological University in Houghton (here in the Copper Country) did have rooms in the dormitory available .......(Capt Paul and Dr Nat have knowledge of that University because they taught there)....can not help you with info regarding motorcycling in the Seney area...just ask on this site...someone knows the answer...if you enter the poetry contest Charlie will have to send you 4 pasties if you win...

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 04:48 pm:

Thank you, Mary Lou. Made a note. Though whenever I make it, won't be a student anymore. Still, one thing good to know.

As to having pasties shipped - uh, well, that'd be fun, but, why should I be so cruel to Charlie? ;)

With the things I got in my head right now, I'd much sooner write a poem about the valuation of biodiversity, or woods.
