Eight years ago we were showcasing the newly renamed Calumet Public Hospital. There had been a contest to come up with a new name. All of us were hoping they would call it "Still Waters East" because so many of our residents were there with the flu.

It wasn't long after this shot that Dr. Gilbert saved my life on the operating table with an appendix which was about to give out. We appreciate all of the dedicated workers in the health care community here in the Copper Country.

Welcome to June, sorry for a little late start on this month's Pasty Cam pages. We had a power outage this week in the Keweenaw which has required a lot of attention, and taken me away from the keyboard.

Have a good month!

Charlie, Are you guys running out of hamsters, Lake Linden just ordered new ones since theirs died yesterday. Maybe they will lend you their three legged chipmunk.

I got a little worried when no one was on the current day's site. But I see you've made it just fine. Keep well all.

Afternoon All.
Belated good wishes to Pasty Cam B-day, thank you to all the staff and contributors for many excellent memories. FYI Bridge Cam stuck on 5-29. Get to go to the Tiger/Yankee game tonight courtesy of The Sweetie as a early B-day present. Enjoy the day everyone!!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, June 1, 2006 - 08:42 pm:

Thanks for the note about the Bridge Cam, Randall. The power outage caused it to stall, so tomorrow we'll have to reset it.

Nice pic of Keweenaw Memorial, hope to get up there and see Ann in purchasing and Danielle at Portage soon. Workin in the U.P. is great, any time of year, and a nice change from Motown, but most of you know that!

Mikie, I will be on the lookout for your cousin:) About Hal's bushes I just couldn't let them die and this way we will always think of him when we enjoy our raspberries. Were those apricot tarts made with fresh apricots or dried? They sound good.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, June 1, 2006 - 11:18 pm:

Always used dry ones, when my daughter in law made me some she used the fresh ones but it was not the same. When I sold my parents home I took a chrysanium [sp] bush and planted at my house. It is blooming right now and all I can think about is my mom loving that plant she had brought it to Royal Oak From her mothers home in Houghton. Seeing it has brought many memories back. Mom always looked at the moon, and we said that after she died we would comunicate through the moon. So every time I look up and see the moon I always say "Mom you look good tonight." My kids always ask me if she answers, so far she has not.

Mikie,

I have plants from the UP and from my
mother-in-law's backyard here in our Toronto
garden. Rocks from the UP too in among the
plants.

I loved your story about the moon. I have one
about stars. When my uncle died when I was
three years old, my dad took me out to look at
the stars and told me one star in particular
was for Uncle Howard. For years I looked for
him "out there." Some nights I'm still looking
for him and the other "stars" in my life who no
longer walk this earth.

Mikie and Kosk, We have UP sand and rocks and trees also. We planted one tree in particular that we "saved" from Rice Lake. It looked awful. It was a little spruce, I think. It was so bent and ugly that we decided to take it home and give it some tender loving care. We called it Chuck because it reminded us of Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. It was coming along so nicely and when we went to the UP in August we asked my son to water our plants for us. Well, long story short he killed Chuck. We were devastated! We gave him a proper burial though. I'll never forget that little tree as long as I live.

Love the moon and stars stories.

When I was removed from the CC I went up to the Hungarian falls, the Bluff and picked up two stones that I have carried for the last large amount of years. I also have a piece of granite from somewhere up there, and a rock from Jacobville that has beens stolen and returned twice. I also have a rose that was in my grandmothers yard. Funny what you prize. Like everyone else I have some copper. How far is St.Catherins from Toronto? I reenact with a family from there. My nephew is getting married next weekend and I was just told to make sure my suit is cleaned and pressed and buy anything that I need now. Precious knows how bad I am about last minute getting ready.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 08:04 am:

Precious has killed every plant we have ever had in the house. When Kelly lived here she had her plants and they were beautiful I like living with live plants. Sometime I think that I married Morticia Addams. Right now there are two plants with no flowers or leaves. She does like the rack in the cellar. Notice that the trolls have basements and we have cellars.

Deb. We had two blue-spruce trees in pots given to us by a friend when we were building our house here in Escanaba 35yrs ago...... we didn't have a spot for them so they stayed in the pots for the summer while we were back and forth to the cottage at Bootjack..no one watered or cared for them and I thought they were dead in the fall....but one had a pitiful blue-green tip and I thought it deserved a chance.....we trimed and cared for it and today it is the most beautiful blue spruce about 50 feet high...but it is still called "Charlie Brown"..an example: what TLC can do for a living thing.......

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 12:20 pm:

Mary Lou, That is so coincidental that we both named them after the Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Ours had nothing left of it. It was all brown and we were sad for the longest time. My son has STILL not lived that one down. Chuck was our pride and joy and he came from UP. That's a great story about your mother-in-law. Isn't Bobbie up there with her now? I thought they were in the same place. My aunt is going to be 98 in August and still living on her own in the Douglas House apartments. I can only dream of being that spry at that age.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 12:29 pm:

Forgot to tell you guys. This time UP we took back some blackberry bushes. Sure hope they survive because we just LOVE blackberries and the ones UP there are great. We just can't find any that good out here. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 12:45 pm:

Deb...No, the "gals" are not together.....Bobbie is at Stillwaters.....but Syl visits her regularly. I didn't get to Memorial Day Services at Mount Calvery because I just got back from a trip but Syl said: "Not to worry".... she had flowers on Gary's site.......she is really doing great for a 96 yr old lady...I really beleive that Finnish women mature gracefully.....

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 06:26 pm:

Mary Lou, Same goes for the French women. My aunt is going to be 98 and she does NOT look it. She had a couple of mini strokes that's affected her eyesight but it's beginning to come back. She's back to playing pinochle with my folks and other friends. In fact, if you know anything about that card game, she got 1000 Aces yesterday playing straight pinochle. That's hard to do. I've only done it once and we were playing with partners that time. Soon she'll be baking for the "old people" as she calls them. We're lucky to be involved with such wonderful women. I never really got to know Sylvia but I know that Bobbie sure likes her and my mom says she's a really nice lady. You're extremely lucky to have a wonderful mother-in-law.
