Most of us make a trip to the shores of Lake Superior to take in the beauty of her shores and waters, but then there are those like Joyce Tormala and Kathy Jennings who do so to bring us a different perspective on the Big Lake's beauty. Joyce's shot of the wild roses against the backdrop of calm water is unique in it's contradictory subjects...the wild and the calm, which we know can change in a moment. Then there's Kathy's image of the colorful Spotty Knapweed, which adds such a pretty hue to the shores, but in all reality is just a weed and not such a good one at that. Supposedly it invades an area and chokes out the native species wherever it grows, so I guess you could say it's growing like a bad weed. :->

Both pictues are beautiful. Looks like Joyce's is taken at sunset, not sure but that is my guess. The weather looks to be warm in Kathy's photo. I can feel the hot sand under my feet just looking at the pictue.

Thanks Girls! Great Shots!

The flowers & (weeds) are beautiful with Lake Superior showing the smallest rippple. In the second picture, are they the weeds that if caught on your clothing it would take hours to pick them out to Mom's dismay?

Two more winners! I love the calm lake and the flowers.

I love your wall calender, but I would REALLY LOVE a page-a-day picture calender for my desk. Bet you would sell lots & lots if available. Just a suggestion........

Whoo hoo! Can hardly wait. Only a few days left and we'll be headed for the UP! Oh, do tell, all you up there in God's country... what is mosquito season like up there this year? Last year in July, it was so dry we didn't SEE a mosquito! I know, I know, that was probably just a "hundred year" mosquito low; but I was "hoping" we'd get lucky again this year....

Those "WEEDS" are sure beautiful... I like that shot better than the roses!

Beautiful weeds!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 12:02 pm:

Hi
Just a note: we aren't calling Spotty Knapweed a weed because we're making judgements as to how pretty it is; rather, it is killing native plants (out-competing them). I too prefer non-cultivated plants(our property up north is all natural ground cover), but I'd rather see Houghton's Goldenrod or Pitcher's Thistle, which can grow nowhere else than on the shores of the Great Lakes.

Both pictures are lovely and, even if it is a weed, the blue flower is a show stopper.
