Many a U.P. river empties into the Big Lake, seeming like a "drop in a bucket" when you view the vastness of Lake Superior from her shores. This first shot is the mouth of the Hurricane River, located in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and that would be Debra McCumber's fiancé Brock, along with Nate, Callie Jane (on her first camping trip) and Hilarie Alwine, who were enjoying the cool waters rushing over their feet (all but the smart one of the bunch, Callie Jane, who kept her tootsies covered and dry! :->) What a beautiful spot for those relaxing beach activities, like wading, walking and beachcombing. The latter always makes me think of looking for seashells (which are rare in the U.P.) or agates (and I'm not seeing too many rocks along this peaceful shore), but the sign Debra photographed does mention that activity. I guess walking along the shoreline searching for treasures of any kind can be categorized as beachcombing. What a way to spend the day!

Eclogite-Don't envy you in that Houston weather in the summer, been there, yuk!....but on another note, meant to say yesterday that I also really enjoyed your photo gallery and comments.
A little chilly here, only 59° and almost noon! :)
Beautiful!!

By Nate (Nalwine) on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 11:57 am:

I wish I were right there again right now :) So does Callie, I think she likes camping more than sleeping in her own crib!

Hooray for the kid who knows her own mind. How can she help but long for the cool waters of the Hurricane. Like the sweatshirt as it is THE college in this family. What great pictures.

Perfect day.... 70 degrees here on beautiful, Lake Michigan....sunny with a slight breeze..not a bug in sight......I am off for a walk along the beach...ahhhh..such is life in the UP.

Looks like a perfect vacation spot. Brock & Deb, you can count on me to tag along for your next trip north!

By Debra J McCumber (Debrajean) on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 01:56 pm:

Hi everyone! It really was a wonderful vacation. There is so much to see, especially along the Pictured Rocks lakeshore, but there just never seems to be enough time. Hurricane beach was very sandy but if you head down it toward the Au Sable lighthouse in no time you will find all sorts of sandstone, huge boulders and pebbles. It's a really neat piece of shoreline, that's for sure. The dog in that second shot is our Abbi Jean - she wore herself out that very first day but still had a great time exploring the U.P. with us. Mary Drew - thank you for posting some of our pictures. KJ - you are more than welcome anytime!!

I enjoyed looking through your album, Debra. It really makes you want to take a trip UP.

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 04:10 pm:

Hurricane River is one of my very favorite spots in the world. I have pictures there of me when I was little, and later of me with my children. I would give ANYTHING to be there right now instead of stuck in NJ! We were there last summer on a wonderfully warm day, and we spent the whole day in the river...even Superior was warm that day.

I love the beach shot....looks so beautiful and so peaceful.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 05:54 pm:

Debra, I enjoyed your album. Brings back memories of our trip to Hurricane Campground. We stopped there last summer but didn't camp. It was a really warm, buggy day. Can't wait to go back.

It was great to see the pictures of Nate, Hilarie, Callie. Nate was a student worker in the library I work at. It's been a few years since Nate and I have seen each other. Looking forward to seeing you in Mishawaka in July.

Since there has been no mention of Flag Day, or even a Flag photo, 4 June 14, 2006, I'll make a 'better late than not at all' post. Someone posted these 2 old postmarks of a 13-Star U.S. Flag. I would like 2 c the U.S. Postal Service revive it:

This Michigan Highways website (not mine) has a photo (not
mine) that has a U.S. Flag in it (2nd photo):
