By
Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 07:36 am:

Do you remember this shot from back in '98? The daily Pasty Cam was less than 2 months old, but it had become a habit for sure. And Jonathan's trips back and forth to Tech were the source of some interesting scenes along the way. The circus was in town and had a temporary playpen for the elephants up behind the SDC. Seemed a little strange they would be here this time of year. Perhaps recruiting?

I've missed a couple this week in commenting on our daily shots from eight years ago. Sometimes the days are so packed with details that it's like an assembly line. As I'm scrambling to keep up with production, some pieces get missed, like the second and third photo in yesterday's Cam Notes, which are there now if you want to go back and look. Guess I'll have to slow down and take some time to smell the elephants.

Lord willing I'll be back again tomorrow for another informative Shoebox Memory. Where did the week go?

Here in Marathon we are having the annual Seven Mile Bridge Run. It should be over by 9 AM. My husband is one of the Ham radio operators recruited to help, so he will be there until it is over. His day started at 6 but the actual run is from 7-9 AM.Nice cool breeze is blowing so the 1500 runners have some beautiful weather to enjoy. Did I say yesterday that the season is winding down! Well, starting today it should be.

By Sunrise Side MI (Ilovelucy2) on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 12:00 pm:

Good Morning All!!
Finally back in Mi from a fantastic trip to see son and family in Ca. Had a super time and even helped daughter-in-law plant annuals. I am getting Spring fever really bad now but know that things cannot be planted for another month.
I tried to keep up will all here but we did
LOTS of sightseeing. Hello to Sur5ver, and Tim.
Everyone have a wonderful Earth Day and weekend.

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 01:41 pm:

Yesterday I posted a message about a lovely stained glass
creation made for my wife as a retirement present. The image
was based on a beautiful photo by Ray Laakaniemi which Mary
used last August as her end-of-the month picture. Someone
wrote in asking why I had not posted the image itself. I am
technically challenged so that was not possible. However,
someone else did. Whoever it was (Mary?), thanks! Then Mary
Lou Curtin wrote to say she knew a great house in Esky we
should look at. The sun, she said, would hit that in the morning,
and it would be beautiful! What a nice thought, Mary Lou,
thanks again. And I think I know the house. Another person
wrote in wondering how the rising sun could hit a house in Esky.
I think that person thought Esky faces south. Actually, it is on
the western shore of Little Bay de Nocquet so the rising sun hits
the town dead-on.

I apologize for not writing all this last night, but it is hard to
root for the Red Wings thru two overtimes and then get back to
the computer after all that worrying I had to do during the
game..

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 01:50 pm:

Good afternoon everyone :) Hi ILoveLucy...aka Granny Jelly Bean.
Beautiful spring day here, that is making me sooooooo homesick for Michigan and the UP. What I wouldn't give, to be in my truck right now, and headed north for the Mighty Mac. Sigh.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 08:53 pm:

Sur5er,I know the feeling. The closer summer comes the harder it is to wait to go UP

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 05:16 am:

Erica, But I wanna go to da UP now :)

Hey Beverly, Are you still up? I'm working on paperwork...hopefully when I am done with this case, I will get the wrong state officials mad and they will kick me out of Indiana, eh :) UP, here I come :)

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 05:23 am:

Hi Renee, I'm still up. So did you snitch any of Ms. Katie's pink birds yet? If she shops every year to pick some up from wallymart, she should have plenty and won't even miss them...

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 05:39 am:

Beverly, Nope, I didn't make it to Ms Katie's to 'borrow' any of her flamingos. Maybe we should make it a field trip? But we would have to go AFTER Ms Katie gets her pool put up...otherwise she might put us to work, installing her pool ;)
That way, we can also go for a swim, after we load her 'borrowed' flamingos into the truck :)

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 05:47 am:

Sounds like a plan. Just don't ask me to drive the truck (cause you know what happened the first and last time I drove one) I just might back it into the pool and then she would really be upset with you for letting me drive.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 05:56 am:

Upset with me? Wouldn't she be upset with you, for driving in reverse? Besides, I'm not too much better with that reverse gear myself.
I was pulling hubby's semi from a loading dock...and I forgot that what is considered first gear on a car, is reverse on a truck. So I started up the semi, put the truck in first gear...err reverse...hit the gas and slid my foot off the clutch...and BAM, hit the loading dock with the back of the semi trailer.
I couldn't figure out why I wasn't going forward...and thought I needed to give the semi more gas...so I pushed the clutch in...really gave that semi some gas...and popped the clutch...and BAM I really hit that loading dock even harder than the first time.
By the third try, I finally figured out that I had the semi in reverse and not first gear. Ooops.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:01 am:

Beverly, You know what would be really funny? "Borrow" one of Ms Katie's flamingos...and then take it sight seeing, all over the UP...and send Ms Katie pictures of the flamingo. 'Da Flamingo in da lake'...'da flamingo diving off da falls'...'da flamingo being chased by da bear'...

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:02 am:

Mannnnnnnnnn...I'd be screaming Whiplash..Whiplash. Did he let you drive again. I do not make mistakes. My mistakes are all very well planned. It's a great way of getting out of a job that should be done by a man. Funny thing...he never learned.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:07 am:

Da flamingo stopped by the cops. Ah, show me your license and registration please. What do you mean you don't have any. Where do you live? Why at Ms. Katy's house, of course. Would you like to take my picture in your squad car?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:17 am:

Yep, he let me drive again...but the time I almost took out the road signs, ended me driving with him. Besides, it was hard trying to drive with hubby....he was always screaming, "Look out!" and I would turn and look at him and ask, "look out for what?" Then he would get even madder and scream, "Don't look at me, look at the road!" Men!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:19 am:

Picture of da flamingo doing the Labor Day walk across the Mighty Mac. Picture of da flamingo doing a swan dive off the Mighty Mac...because Beverly and Renee' found it too difficult to balance their daiquiris, walk, and carry da darn flamingo, across the bridge.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:29 am:

Hic up...I think I'll have another daiquiri please...you know these daiquiris are the same color as the bird your carrying. Are you sure those are strawberries in there?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:41 am:

So hubby went to the gas station yesterday, to fill up my truck. And he was boo hooing about how much it cost...and told me I should consider downsizing, and perhaps consider getting...OMG ...a car.
So I explained to him, that we needed the truck to transport Ms Katie's flamingos...and a car simply would not do, "Because then Beverly would have to ride the entire way to da UP, with a pink flamingo on her lap...and not only would that be uncomfortable, but..."
And hubby remarked, "...look perhaps a bit ridiculous?"
And I replied, "No you fool, do you know how hard it would be for Beverly to drink her daiquiri with a flamingo on her lap? That's why the flamingo has to sit in the back of the truck. Duh!"

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:51 am:

Oh my gosh...you are too funny. Just think with the load I accidently (on purpose) dumped in my back yard, via thru the back wall of the garage, we could have had your hubby build a pen for those darn bird, and penned them up in the back of your truck. Why did Ms. Katie have to choose flamingos in the first place. That ride to the UP would have been so much more enjoyable if they were hummingbirds, and they could have serenaded us all the way UP there.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:56 am:

Sur5er and Berverly--

Sounds like you guys are getting punchy!
Sleep deprivation ??

My dad is on his way to the UP this morning.
He just couldn't wait 4 weeks til we could drive
him there. He's anxious to open the cottage,
burn brush, fix the sauna window, find out how
much an extension to the dock would cost...
Spring fever. Luckily my daughter lives up
there and can check on him.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 06:59 am:

Gotta admit, two women, heading north in a big pickup truck, with flamingo legs hanging out of the tailgate of the truck, would make a pretty funny picture.

Even funnier, the car behind our pickup, "Look mommy, so that's how plastic flamingos migrate...and you told me they couldn't fly. Those ladies in that pickup must be doing at least 90."

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 07:03 am:

Kosk, Good morning :) Hope your dad has a safe trip to your summer cottage in the UP. How long is he going to be up there? Bet you wish you could join him, eh. Tell him that we said 'hi'.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 07:04 am:

P.S....hey Kosk, does your dad want a flamingo for the cottage yard? Beverly and I work for the Plastic Flamingo Relocation Program ;)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 07:57 am:

Beverly and Sur5er, Now that you guys have made my husband and I loao I just thought I'd tell you guys that you're nuts! On our way to Michigan every year we see one little plastic pink flamingo in a swamp. I can't remember exactly where (will have to pay attention next month) and it looks so out of place. Is your plastic flamingo relocation program part of a nationwide restocking of breeding populations? If so they're an endangered species here in MN too. The Tact & Taste police have hunted them almost into extinction. We have a Wallymart here though. I guess we could try to restock them ourselves. But I like the looks of you guys in your trucks, with your daiquiris, loading and unloading those things all over the country. However, since I'm such a daiquiri freak, I think I'd like to join you in your efforts. Do you get Federal grants for this? Sur5er, since you're SO good at making officials mad at you I think we'll have Beverly ask for one.

Kosk, Where is your dad's cabin? Your daughter is in Ishpeming, right? My girlfriend lives there too. The best thing about that town is Da Yooper's Tourist Trap and Museum. It's a hoot! (Well, except for my girlfriend that is.)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 12:44 pm:

Usedtobeayooper, Why I say we join efforts and combine the Plastic Flamingo Relocation program with the Tact and Taste Police Program ;)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 02:01 pm:

Why are we still on yesterday's picture? Oh well.

Sur5er, You may have something there. I don't know what the Tact & Taste police around here have against those adorable plastic flamingos. But maybe they'll give up if they see we've joined efforts. I think I'm going to buy a few from Wallymart and put them around my pool. Maybe in a few years they'll multiply. Hey Sur5er or Beverly, could you please tell me what little plastic flamingo eggs look like so I can tell if there are any around here. Are they pink? I'd hate to breed the poor little things only to have them mowed down or something. I've never seen one of them up in a tree so I'm imagining their nests are somewhere on the ground. Any thoughts on that subject?

I think I really will have to get some to put around my pool. Maybe I'll feel like Ms. Katie does and be able to recite poetry.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 09:12 pm:

My dad made it to the cottage. He's just 15
miles south of Ishpeming. He's already busy
turning on the water and hauling wood for the
woodstove. He's only staying for a couple of
days. You better believe I wish I were there.
Next month can't come too soon.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 09:40 pm:

Kosk, Glad your dad made it. It is worrisome, isn't it? It's now our turn to worry it seems. Is he on Lake Superior, or some other lake? My friend seems to like the area. Her parents live in Marquette, but she grew up in Hubbell which is right outside of Lake Linden. And I hear you. I'll be heading UP there on the 26th of May. Probably won't get to see much cuz we'll only be there for 2 days, but once we hit the Michigan border, all is right with the world! And then we'll go back the end of July for a week. YEEHAW!!!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 06:27 am:

Usedtobeayooper:

Not sure how long I'll get to stay. I'll probably
go back and forth a couple of times. Since I
am a teacher, I get more time off, though I
usually take a couple of courses during the
summer--one in July, one in August. My
husband, being self-employed, basically
doesn't get much time at all. A couple of long
weekends. My total time in the UP usually
comes to 3-4 weeks in the summer, so I know
how fortunate I am.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 07:13 am:

Kosk, You are so lucky to be able to spend so much time there in the summer. I would love that, especially when Lake Superior is warm enough to swim in (or at least to tolerate). I only get 2 weeks off. My husband gets as little as 4 weeks but he takes 2 of them to go to Brule, WI. to fish on the Brule River, once in April and once in October. But he can take off as much time as his vacation fund allows. Nice.
