This is a place where my morning often begins in the spring, summer, and fall, though it's a little hard to reach in the winter. Just about a mile to jog from our home and back in Eagle River, the Evergreen Cemetery is a memorial to all the hardy souls over the past 2 centuries who have called this region 'home'. You couldn't choose a better spot for a final resting place, with a view of Lake Superior right down the road.

The picture above - appearing 8 years ago today - illustrates another aspect of the Pasty Cam. Ocasionally we return, to see a spot from a different perspective, and through the eyes of a different photographer. Years later, Donn de Yampert would return here during that 'hard to reach' season, and give us a glimpse of the other direction. It turned out to be a favorite of regular Pasty Cam watchers that year, being selected for the Pasty Cam Calendar.

Thanks for the link to your album, Joe. I have often thought of taking some shots of the tombstones myself, but then I remember there are hundreds of diligent guest gallery photographers on Pasty Central, and surely someone will take better shots than I can. Glad you did.

It's so interesting to read the inscriptions from the middle 1800's forward, like "Cornish miner killed at the Cliff Mine 1868".

There is a lot of history at the Evergreen Cemetery.

Cemeteries are great places to visit. They're so interesting and rich in history. I love walking our home town cemetery when we go "home".

Thanks for the marvelous shots of the Evergreen Cemetary! I've always loved cemeraties. As a board member of our small township cemetary I helped remap it a couple years ago. And each tomestone seems to tell it's own story. Some locals can fill in many of the untold stories that are fasinating in themselves. Your pics are colorful and telling. One painting I hope to do one day is the cemetary down where we winter, with thousands of bluebonnets thriving among the grave sites. They are not mown till the flowers are thru blooming. I plan to visit my grandparents' graves this summer at Lake Linden.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 11:12 am:

My hubby is from a small town that we like to go back and visit and walk the cemetary. Most of the veterans that are buried there, my hubby played taps with his horn at their funerals. Now days taps is usually played with the help of a recording.

Mount Calvery Cemetery in Lake Linden holds 5 generations of my family..so it takes lots of time to make a visit there....the Memorial Day service is just wonderful...it is by the flag on the hill...hope to be there this year too.......I have never been to the Memorial Day service in Calumet..but imagine it is beautiful because of the number of white crosses dating back to the Civil War...lots of family and friends are there too..my Polkinghorn & Curtin-in=laws are buried there.......something special about having all your family in one beautiful place...lots of great memories.....

I love cemeteries. Especially the Evergreen one.
Whenever I'm on the road I try to take in a cemetery and
I always learn something new. My family is used to this
behavior and even goes looking for me in them on trips
if they're not sure where I am.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 06:36 pm:

Mary Lou, You're right about Mount Calvary Cemetary. I'll be there this Memorial Day. Don't know if I'll make it to the ceremony, but I'll definitely go there as I'll be in the UP for Memorial Day. I remember when I was a kid in school and we used to play taps out there. I would take my trombone way into the woods and play the echo. It still sends chills through me just thinking about it.

I, too, have been to the cemetary in Eagle River. It's great. What a neat spot to be buried, if that doesn't go too along with everything else in Eagle River.

Kosk, The purse string thing is hilarious. Why wouldn't anybody find that funny? You know they're probably not stopping to be a good samaritan, though I'm sure some would. Anyway, that would be great. Wish I'd have thought of it as a kid. Where were you when I was a kid? lol I spent most of my time up in the woods behind my house. Couldn't get into a lot of trouble up there, except for the times we did. lol

Hi Dave, Long time no talk. We'll have to remedy that.

Usedtobeayooper:

Sure hope the cemetery doesn't go--I'm
hoping to make it my final resting place one
day. Since discovering it many years ago, I
always make a pilgrimage there every
summer.

Getting very excited. My son and husband
have gone to the airport to get our
daughter/sister. I'm keeping the food warm
and keeping the dog company. Hallelujah!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 09:11 pm:

Kosk, Yeah, it'd be a nice place to rest. I'm sure your family is going to have a great time all together. Enjoy it. There's nothing like having family around! Will be thinking about you guys. When does your son leave? We'll be thinking about all of you when that happens too.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 09:31 pm:

Welcome back David :) Don't become a stranger again, eh ;)

Kosk, Hope you are enjoying your family get together. And isn't that what life is all about...sharing moments like this with our family :)

ILoveLucy2: Great to hear that you made it safe and sound to CA, and are enjoying the grand kiddies. Stay dry ;) And yes, we did have warm temps and sunshine today...with a beautiful breeze off of the lake. Perfect day for opening up the windows and drying laundry on the line.

Just talked to hubby on the phone, and he is cruising through southern Ohio, with the windows of his cab open...and enjoying the nightime air.

Love the pic of the cemetary...glad to hear that I am not the only one who finds them to be a wealth of history. Nothing like a nice walk in a small town cemetary, and reading the inscriptions on the head stones.

Cemetary wandering. A most delightful pastime. Not only have I wandered all of the Copper Country cemetaries many times, but also stop at any old looking cemetary whereever we happen to be traveling. My kids have been to cemetaries all over this country. We've taken many cool etchings from headstones. They used to think this was an odd pastime, now they are hooked and do it on their own too. One of our favorite headstones is in the Marinette cemetary. It's a carving of a tree, I believe the occupant was a lumber baron of some sort.
