Not the first church to appear on the Pasty Cam, but the first one in regular current use. (You may recall Phoenix Church appeared about a month earlier, 3/7/98). Grace United Methodist is a stately building along the upper main street in Houghton, and its members are among the many supporters of Still Waters in Calumet, where Pasty Central was born. It takes a lot to keep this Home for the Aged going, and folks of all denominations (or no denomination) have all had a part in caring for those in need of extra care and assistance in the sunset years of their lives.

The architecture of buildings in the Copper Country became an important part of the Pasty Cam early on. Every scene from every vantage point triggers memories for all who share a Keweenaw connection. And eventually more scenes from other towns around the U.P. would make their way to these pages.

I missed Pasty Cam yesterday, but as I was checking to see what I had missed I noticed (once again) mention of black flies in the spring. My husband and I bought land in Bumbletown last fall and plan to retire up there in about 2 years. My hobby is gardening and from what I've read about black flies they could be a real deterrent. When do they arrive and how long do they stay???

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Monday, April 10, 2006 - 01:50 pm:

Carmen,

All I can tell you about my experiences with the little black pests is that they arrive too soon and stay toooooo long!!!! LOL

One year in Eagle Harbor someone had put clear fly-catching tape on the windows. Neatest stuff, it can go right on the pane. By the time we were there, it was full of blackflies. I've been looking for it ever since. Anyone know where it can be purchased?

Donn's photo above is of the beautiful Iron County Court House on the top of the hill in Crystal Falls.

Carmen,

Write off outdoor activities most June's ... That's why Mrs. Bill wanted a screened in porch.

Think of an enclosed mini-greenhouse!

By Carmen J Tippett (Tippett) on Monday, April 10, 2006 - 05:32 pm:

Thanks Mr. Bill. I have a greenhouse now, guess we'd better include it in our retirement plans as well!
