I can hardly believe the Pasty Cam was 27 days old before its first view of the Portage Canal Lift Bridge, which joins Houghton and Hancock. This icon of the Copper Country would become a frequent subject of discussion about its history, its construction, and its role as the gateway to the Keweenaw.

One of the first webcams in the area, the "Bridge Cam" takes a different point of view, looking down from Daryl and Bill Laitila's home on the Hancock side. Over the years we have been archiving the high resolution photos taken by the Bridge Cam, and you can see a year-round slide show which has one day spread over that year.

C'mon, guys, beam me up with my coveted Early Bird Award! I'm celebrating the beginning of my spring break by going to the dentist for a crown prep and my Early Bird might bring me good luck!

Marsha- They probably will later. Sometimes it takes them awhile to come back and check it. They are very busy, you know.
Good luck on the crown prep.
Loved the slide show. If you put it on 1 second, it's pretty cool.

Kathie and David Murto sent the picture below to me, wondering what the building might be. David was recently in the Atlantic Mine area, looking for the cemetery and found this building on the road leading to there. He said the word "Observatory" was written down the side of the building, with another word that he couldn't make out, intersecting the word observatory, to form a "cross". David thinks it may be some type of "star observatory" Anyone have any insight into what the Mystery Building is?

That's the MTU Amjoch observatory operated by the Physics and EE depts.

There's a photo gallery here:

Bob,

Do you if this observatory is still in operation? David said it looks like it is not. Do you know for sure if it is used to this day? Thanks for your help, it has been nagging at us trying to figure out what this building is used for.

As far as I know, it's still in use (there was an astronomy workshop for secondary teachers held up there last October).

Editor's note: Thanks, Bob! :->

Thank you for the information, I took this picture when I was up doing a video shoot for Chrysler at KRC. It was a very nice facility everyone was very professional and helpful! I look forward to working at KRC again.

I received this information today, about the observatory in question:

Quote:

Hi there:

In case your question hasn’t been answered, AMJOCH stands for Amelia and Joseph Chimino, the parents of Dave Chimino, former Professor Emeritus of Physics at Michigan Tech. I had the privilege of using his observatory during the summer of 1989. It was originally built in the early 70s. I imagine Professor Chimino has since passed on.

Hope this helps,
