Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 07:40 am:

Nearing the end of week #2 on the new 'Pasty Cam' back in 1998, we featured a photo of one of our Pasty Makers, Gert Keranen. It was her birthday, and when asked how old, she said "Old enough for the rock pile". Actually, she was only 95 that day.

Before this daily feature began, we had presented occasional photos of Still Waters' residents on "Pasty Day", when they would gather in the dining room to peel veggies to make their pasties. Years later, when we came into compliance with USDA inspection requirements, the role of the residents shifted to that of spokesmen and women for Pasty Central, as we designated full time workers to carry on the pasty baking schedule. Gert and others enjoyed their role as taste-testers and 'quality control experts'.

We're still having fun after all these years.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 07:51 am:

Yes Japei, It is a beautiful winter day here too. That has been very rare this winter but we have it today. It's not cold either. It's the perfect winter day.

Good Morning all,
Well, we heard one thunder boomer last night. We have a 7 month old pup and she really was confused as we were ... too early for nice warm temps..although tomorrow they predict snow again...no wonder we are all sick!!!
Japei, wonderful pictures today. I picked the apple blossoms for my background.. Certainly a touch of Spring!!! Have a good week all!!
Hello sur5er.

I would be very interested in hearing from others on this
message board, about what you think of the 2006 SEV tax
assessment notice. I realize this is not our taxable value, but
many here in Jacobsville went up 11.125%. I consider that
outrageous!

Any thoughts?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 10:51 am:

the bridge cam looks a little "snowy" right now. What I would give to be walking in it to pasty central to peel a potato or two.

The big problem these days is not so much earning our keep....
as keeping our earnings!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 10:58 am:

Good morning everyone :) Wow, did we ever have some major thunder storms out here last night...can't remember the last time it rained that hard or for that long. Woke up this morning, and looked outside...couldn't believe all the buds on the trees, from this weekend's warm weather and last night's rain.
Hi ILoveLucy2 :)
Barb, sorry to hear about your assesment taxes. Ouch! A couple of years ago, the steel mills on Lake Michigan were sold to foreign investors...the state of Indiana gave them a tax break...and we property owners were left to pick up the tab. Like I needed another reason to not like Indiana, eh.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 12:35 pm:

Is that fog or snow on the Portage Bridge cam?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 12:42 pm:

Are you in the middle of a snowstorm? It's white out George Hite's window, too.

By moi (Moi) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

School was called off early.
We're getting heavy wet stuff.
Makes for greasy driving! :(

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 01:27 pm:

What a turbulent weather year. Last Wednesday the geese were flying north from Green Bay, and the skunks were very noticeable in Crystal Falls. Sure as heck looked like spring ...

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 01:32 pm:

Well, it sounds as though you are getting more snow up there?
It is 70 degrees here in k-zoo!! We are under a tornado watch
and a high wind advisory, it is gusty out! We had a
thunderstorm roll through about 3 a.m. and another at 10 a.m.,
lots of lightening made for a nice light show at 3 a.m.! Still, I
wish I was in the U.P., Cooper Harbor to be exact!!!

By Margo (Margo) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 05:19 pm:

Storm was well planned. Hopefully all the students made it back to Tech yesterday. Drive safely everyone.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 06:35 pm:

Today I kept looking at the Tech Ski Trail Cam.It was pretty cool to watch it storming!!Sure looks like a dandy storm.

We are supposed to get a bad storm tonight. Possibly winds up to 60mph and hail 3/4th inch or larger. You guys up there stay safe.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 10:41 pm:

According to a SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT issued at 7:04 PM EST on Monday March 13 by the Marquette, MI National Weather Service...

The blizzard conditions in both Houghton and Keweenaw counties have caused both counties to pull their snow plows off the highways due to the snow and blowing snow and near zero visibilities, that have made it nearly impossible to see the roadways.

Travel is impossible across both Houghton and Keweenaw counties tonight.

The Keweenaw county road commission and Houghton county road commission expect to resume plowing Tuesday morning at around 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM respectively.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 - 12:27 am:

We have been having some weird weather here in San Jose also. Snow, thunder and lightning and heavy winds and rain all at the same time. Mt. Hamilton is just white with snow. Very pretty!

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 - 03:44 am:

Speaking of the stormy weather conditions I want to say "hats off to the businesses that stayed open during the stormy weather." Some of the busnesses used the convenient excuse of the weather to take the day off but it may not have been very convenient to some of their regular customers. People still need gas, grocercies, conduct necessary banking business, etc. even if the weather is not cooperative. Beside the local customers we have a lot of snowmobilers staying in the area; people staying in motels need to have restaurants and gas stations available to them. Thanks again to the businesses that maintained their regular hours during the adverse weather conditions.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 - 08:04 am:

DAve of Mohawk, I agree! Hat's off to those necessary services. But sadly sometimes staying open encourages people to get out in dangerous weather. I know, I used to work in a bank, and it always amazed me the miles some of the public would trek in a snowstorm just to cash their check vs waiting for tomorrow.

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 - 09:02 am:

WOW!!! You guys in da U.P. are buried in snow!!! Down here in
K-zoo we had "wild" weather yesterday but nothing like you!!! It
was 70 degrees yesterday at noon and this morning it is white
out!! Michigan weather! Gotta love it!!
