It's not that often you get to fly over land this close, so it's always a treat when E. Neil Harri takes us on a virtual tour of the area. Today, we're up the top and over Mount Baldy (also known as Mount Lookout), near Eagle Harbor. I've been up there on foot myself and it's a great hike, but haven't taken the trek uphill on snowshoes like the folks that Neil spotted at the very top. The second shot is zoomed in closer so you can pick them out. Looks like there may be three of them up there enjoying the view!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 08:33 am:

Mary, I did a little snowshoeing myself yesterday, up to the radar base on Mt. Horace Greeley. Seems the road commission has not been keeping it clear, like in the past, so I had to wade through some deep stuff to get up there.

We had installed a remote switch to power cycle equipment up there (for the Pasty.NET wireless network). But it seems that the remote switch itself had a glitch, and had to be reset by hand. I definitely got some exercise.

By the way, take note of the new "What'sUP" graphics with each day's picture. There had been some comments that it was hard to go back to a particular day, directly to the What'sUP page. So we applied for a grant from the Department of Redundancy Department to repeat a direct link to each day's second discussion area. Let us know what you think.

And check back a little latter, all the way back to the first of March, as we post the links for you to catch up with our story of how the Pasty Cam began in March of 1998, which has had a chapter each day on the What'sUP page.

Gorgeous shots! It'd be nice to see these from an airplane if I liked to fly. Nice job!

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 09:02 am:

Morning All.

Love that reference to the "Dept. of Redundancy." A lot of lively posting yesterday. Seismic Pirate has it right!!! Enjoy the day everyone.

nice

By Bob Gilreath (Bobg) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 10:26 am:

that is one of my favorite hikes in the Keweenaw.

I always take visiting friends there, and tell them its the best view in the Keweenaw that most tourists don't see.

funny story there one year. 6 of us along with our 6 kids hiked the fairly easy trail up the west ridge line and were sitting up on top enjoying the view. 2 kids came up in backpack carriers and we carried up a small cooler.

We are sitting on top enjoying a cold one, Then from the north east directly up the steep slope comes 3 guys huffing and puffing cheering that they made it. looked around and saw us and said, how did you get up here with all that.

we laughed and showed them the trail ;-)

Charlie, Thanks for all your hard work!! I love this site!! I am
home re-couping from Carpal Tunel Surgery on Friday, so typing
is not the easiest with this huge bandage, but I'm doing it! I love
this site, always cheers me up! Would love to snowshoe!!
Especially to see sights like this one !!! Thanks again!!!

By dotti caldwell (Dotti) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 11:38 am:

Yes, yesterdays posts were very interesting and educational. I learned alot! Great pics today too. This site always makes me feel good too. Thanks for all your hard work!

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 01:32 pm:

Good morning everyone. Rough seas in the GoM (Gulf of Mexico) today-no sleep last night and only tea and dinner rolls for breakfast:(

Mt. Baldy looks to be another Brockway Mountain. Does anyone know if it is made up of conglomerate (a bunch of cemented pebbles), as well?

I've noticed that George Hite often refers to hiking up Mt. Baldy and wondered about it. I guess there are still a few places in the Keweenaw I haven't been to and I definately have a new wallpaper...

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 01:42 pm:

On top of Mount Baldy...all covered in snow....
Great, now I am gonna be singing that song all day today ;)
Department of Redundancy...love it...sorta reminds me of the case I have been working on, for the past several months. Okey dokey, I might just be stealing that phrase ;)
Loulou, Hope you are feeling better...we'll just knickname you the one armed keyboarder, eh. ;)

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 01:55 pm:

Sur5er... Thanks, I need all the amusing I can get today!!! Not a
good one for sittin' around!! Seismic Pirate.. was thinking that
I'd love to be "on deck" in the Gulf of Mexico layin' in the sun but
when I got to the rough seas, forget it!! Sorry! And one armed
keyboarding is good for the concentration!!!! Hah!

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 02:23 pm:

Loulou:
Yes, one-armed keyboarding is good for the concentration! Thats exactly what you do out here in rough weather unless you have a way to secure your chair to the desk. Matter of fact, you do everything with one hand holding on to something. I hope you recover soon!!

I was just thinking this morning that most people have never taken a shower while it heaves up and down 20-30 feet...

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 02:45 pm:

Seismic Pirate.. were the tea and dinner rolls because that's all
there was or was it to "soothe" a rough stomach? No, I never
have had the chance to take a shower while in a boat or in a boat
heaving up and down 20-30 feet!! I think I'd miss my head with
the shampoo!!!

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 03:16 pm:

The tea and rolls are just a safe bet when it gets like this. I just braved a small bowl of ham and lentil soup, but that's my limit until the seas come down.

A shower in these seas is quite interesting, especially when your half-asleep...

I have a bow cabin this rotation and although this picture is from one of my old ships, this is just about what it was like as I showered this morning:

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 03:28 pm:

Seismic Pirate... Just what I thought!! Both times!! Tea and
toast (rolls) to soothe and beautiful photo, but I think I'll shower
on "dry" land, thank you. I'll save my layin' in the sun for the
Lake Michigan beach this summer!!!

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 03:28 pm:

btw,
how do you post an image instead of the URL?? You would think since I work with some of the most powerful computers on the planet, I would know these things, but I am clueless when it comes to html...

thanks!!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 05:31 pm:

Seismic Pirate

Ditto the showering in high seas. Try sleeping on the orlop deck when an icebreaker is working 24/7.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 05:53 pm:

When I first clicked to get to the first picture, I thought someone had taken a picture of a chocolate pasty!!! What a thought. Great shots folks.

By Sam Wentzel (2cansam) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 05:54 pm:

Well read the stories about many people hiking up MT. Lookout. But how many people can actually say they road a truck to the top. My budy and I made 4 trips to the top in his 2 door Ford Exploder. Got more than a few scrapes and rubs, but well worth it. The few people we meet at the top couldn't believe it. What a trip.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 06:00 pm:

Margaret,
Hmmmm, what could we fill our chocolate pasty's with? I think walnuts, caramel, soft fudge served up with a cold glass of whole milk. Oh, my...time for a dairy queen run.

By a m hill (Lvcamnotes) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 06:20 pm:

guests,
i've never been sure where mt baldy is. is it
part of brockway mountain?

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 07:21 pm:

I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT MT BALDY LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THE OLD THURNER'S BAKERY SPICE CAKES. THEY USED TO COME SIX IN A PACKAGE AND WE COMMONLY CALLED THEM "HORSE APPLES".

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 07:44 pm:

Lvcamnotes, Mt. Baldy is located in Eagle Harbor...over by Lake Bailey. It's also known as Lookout Mount.
Marc, Hope the seas have calmed down a bit. I think I got a little sea sick, just reading about the pitching of the ship.
Lorelei, Hang on and I'll go with you to Dairy Queen..but first we have to stop at Mikie's at eat some of that stew he made ;)

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 08:18 pm:

Mt. Baldy (aka Mt. Lookout)

Mt Baldy (aka Mt Lookout)

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 08:56 pm:

Sur5er,
The seas are up and will be staying up for the next few days, unfortunately. We get a short lull in the wind, tomorrow, then back up we go to 5 meter seas on Wed. Winter in the GoM, stinks, but thats the life of a Pirate...

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 09:01 pm:

MrBill,
I've talked to icebreaker crew-way too loud for this pirate. Ships creak enough on their own enough to make sleep difficult at times. I suppose things can get a bit bumpy as well, eh?
I'll stick to these lousy old seismic vessels, thanks.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 09:18 pm:

I want to be in the UP. I want a chocolate pasty. (I'll take mine with skim milk, though. I think it gets even colder.)

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 11:49 pm:

Anyone have directions as to where to park and find the easy trial to the top? This is one of the places I have read about and would like to try this summer.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 - 07:33 am:

Every trail is a trial to get there. I'm going this summer also.

By mark olson (Molson) on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 11:33 pm:

When I was a kid and spent weekends here in Eagle Harbor in winter, I would slide on my back in a plastic sled on all the snowmobile trails through the area. I think that would be easier to do than snowshoeing to Baldy
