U.P. temps are up, then down, then up again this time of year, creating a crusty topping for the snow left on the ground. It makes snowshoeing on top of the snow easier, since you don't sink as much! This shot from Karl Berg, gives you a good idea of what I'm talking about. You can see the sharp edges left around the tracks where the snow has crunched underfoot, along with the sparkle the sun gives to the ice crystals on top the snow.

Hey! I saw the first ship of the season last night off the Keweenaw Peninsula! The weather was so nice that me and Eino went for a drive up to Copper Harbor, and on our way back (in the wee hours) we saw the 1,000-foot James R. Barker on its way from Duluth to Marquette. In some areas of the midwest they watch for robins to see evidence of springtime. In these parts - - we look for the big boats!

Great picture, Karl! And great album!

We're seeing a lot of snow still. I think snow is fine during the winter but it's almost spring. I know there are folks who don't agree with me but when you get teased with that warm weather and then you get nailed with a snowstorm it's quite disheartening. Even though the pictures are beautiful and so is the snow, I'm ready for spring.

Toivo......so where did you & Eino party in Copper Harbor till the "wee hours"?....just curious.....we partied at the Elks Club here in Escanaba and had a great time. Hard to believe everyone in town is Irish...but I swear it's true........*-([:o)

Deb S.... So your ready for spring. Then you had better contact those people that love snow so much that they do "dances" to get more. :) Also very "interesting" to hear about your preference in food tastes.........

The James R. Barker will be making two trips between Superior and
Marquette before the locks open.

When the snow crunches like that, its probably chilly enough to
freeze the hair in your nose too.

Still love the picture, frozen nostril hair or not.

I walked to the car in the morning down the packed trail carrying snowshoes in my hand, then home from work at night wearing them on the trail turned soft from the bright spring sun. It wasn't usually too cold then just enough for the snow to harden overnight. Nice time of year. Hard maple icicles to break off, birds coming back and not having to shovel for days on end! I think John P. might be thinking of the cold when the snow squeaks rather than crust crunching and ice forms on the beard and nose hairs! Mary Lou, I like your smiley.

Looks like someone went snowshoeing :) My sister and I were talking on the phone last night about there being so little snow this year, that we hadn't been able to snow shoe.
Langoman...guilty as charged. Charlotte and I are snow bunnies...what can we say...other than, "let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" :)

Deb S...We love Rubins also. Have you ever tried Bavarine sauer kraut? It's sweet as opposed to the bitter, biting taste of the other.
My late mother in law used to fry the regular krat, after a quick rinse, with any kind of sausage. Delicious.
