Over the past 8 years of the Pasty Cam, there have been over 250 references to "sauna" in the daily pictures and discussion. An rightly so - as "sauna" and "pasty" are closely related in U.P. tradition. We invite you to hear a new 23 minute documentary from Solex Media, as Matt Monte introduces Jim Kurtti and others for some insights into SAUNA. Choose your connection speed for best listening:

broadband version (Windows Media Player)

dial-up version (Real Audio)

Stay tuned to Pasty Central in the days ahead for this year's Heikinpäivä festivities. Have a refreshing week :o)
Ouch!

I was just thinking when I saw this picture that it reminded me of my gramma's sauna in bootjack. Then I opened the page and it said gramma Hilda's sauna....her name was Hilda. Great pic...man I would love to fire it up and spend some time in there...mmmmmmmmmm!

The Dive into the water is awesome....where do I send the get well card A great Day in Fayette!

By anna swiniuchowski (Abswini) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 10:55 am:

great picture of a winter swim. i was just telling the first graders (here in N.J.) how people in the UP do a Polar Bear swim. Since the ocean isn't frozen it didn't seem bizzare to them, but chopping through the ice is an example of "extreme sports". Can't wait to show them this picture tomorrow!!! thanks!

By Pete Wilberding (Peshtigopete) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 11:15 am:

Yeah right. I recall the time I was talked into yumping into Superior after a sauna at Marcotte's at Little Traverse in November. First and last time for that.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 11:20 am:

Whitewaves: Welcome to pastycam! I saw your post yesterday. Have you read Joseph Heywood's new novel about the Garden Peninsula? We have friends there that live in a log cabin on 18th Road. Been to Fayette many times, but not lately.

By Paul A Rose (Whitewaves) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 11:51 am:

Marsha: I have not read Joseph heywoods book yet! I need to get it to busy with the house. Thanks for the welcome. I live on the old park entrance road old183...so its real easy to walk over to the park. The only people I know that live on the Peninsula in a log cabin are Gail and Virgina. I have made some great friends here. If someone ten years ago told me I would be living in the U.P. I would have thought them crazy. I lived in Detroit for many years and Moved to Atlanta Georgia that got real old real fast. I am glad to have found this web site I have began to post images from fayette at the following:

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 02:09 pm:

Why do all these silly trolls in the LP pronounce it SAWNA instead of the correct SOWNA ?

I"m building one this summer.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 03:15 pm:

Good Luck Jeff. Sounds like fun. I'm not sure I am vigorous enough to jump into the lake, but I could run from the patio to the "sowna" in a foot of snow.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 03:37 pm:

Jeff, Your 'sauna' pronounciation question reminds me of the time I had to transcribe tapes from a phone tap...that had to be formatted exactly as the words were pronounced. One wouldn't think that there would be such a drastic change in dialect from Michigan to Indiana...but there was.
Many a night, we sat around, passing the headphones to the tapes around, trying to figure out a certain word or phrase...and then once we figured it out, I had to try and figure out how to spell it.
Example: Maddein...was median.

By allen philley (Allen) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 03:56 pm:

I'm a troll ,I live in the LP in Allegan. I was born in Hancock. I have probems with pronouncing words also. But it does not helpwhen in the UP some words will have three different ways to say depending on rather your ancestry. Some names like the french Bete Grise, Once I learned it translation ( Gray Beast ) now I cant say the wrd proper it just sounds wrong in my head. And Iniana is closer to me than the UP but it is definetly a foriegn language.

By Marc Slis (Marc) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 05:03 pm:

Love the sauna photos! I'm at sea, in East Asia and everyone on my ship thinks I'm nuts for taking a sauna after excercising on deck in 95 deg heat.

Still, the sauna onboard is my only connection to the Copper Country except for a daily dose of Pasty.com :)

By 69 TOOT (Flyindamooney) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 06:29 pm:

Sure miss Jukuri's Sauna in Laurium.....We used to visit on Sat nite when I was suffering at da Tech..........One fellow had a horrible acne condition which he cleaned up in one night at the sauna............

By Gus LL (Gusll) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 07:00 pm:

When we were kids and lived on the farm we would go into the sauna and take as much steam as we could stand. then we would run outside and roll around in the soft snow. It took a few seconds before we felt the cold. It was very refreshing.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 07:07 pm:

Excellent documentary for those who have time to view it.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 09:10 pm:

Good evening from Mishawaka, IN. Don't think I could do the dive into the lake after the sauna.

Welcome Whitewaves. Enjoyed checking out your pictures. I've been to Fayette once so I have some idea where you're located.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Sunday, January 8, 2006 - 09:41 pm:

we were lucky to have the Jukuri family as neighbors at our camp in Bootjack.... we were invited to use their private sauna every time they finished using it.......nothing like smelling the smoke from a "real" sauna while watching the beautiful sunsets on Portage Lake.......after a fun filled day....wonderful memories of a super nice family.....

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Monday, January 9, 2006 - 12:28 pm:

Hi all! Checking the web-cams this morning, (it's still morning in Arizona) and.....looks like the SUN is actually showing its' face up in the UP!! You guys deserve it. Enjoy! Send the drizzle you've been having out our way. We need the rain badly.

By Alex J. Tiensivu (Ajtiensivu) on Monday, January 9, 2006 - 02:38 pm:

GRANDMA HILDA'S SAUNA? Weird... My Grandma Tiensivu was a Hilda! I thought she came back, or something!

I am freezing just from looking at that guy about to do a belly-flop into the good old Michigan waters! WOW!

By Dennis Kemper (Gliderrider) on Monday, January 9, 2006 - 05:27 pm:

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, January 9, 2006 - 05:35 pm:

Yes, Dennis, I've been wondering what's going on! Strange, isn't it?

By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Monday, January 9, 2006 - 06:19 pm:

By Chuck K (Chuckclarkston) on Monday, January 9, 2006 - 06:35 pm:

I would guess enough people have not taken their sauna yet. That is why we do not have our new daily picture.

By Paul Haataja (Pahaataj) on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 - 03:11 pm:

Many memories from Grandma Hilda's sauna over there in the UP! I have been in that sauna many times. It still gets fired quite often. Now, over here in Finland I get a sauna in every night with "always on" type of sauna stove we have here at home.
