Yoopers often head to warmer climates for a break this time of year, but not Laurie Bashaw and her hubby, Ed, they headed over to Mackinac Island on the icebreaker ferry. The trip was a Christmas gift for Laurie from Ed, this past year and she said they would absolutely do it again. Quite the unique experience being there in the winter when there are way less people visiting. Laurie said what they found amazing were the number of snowmobiles, as it is their mode of transportation in the winter since bicycles aren’t as efficient with snow. She also said they were not annoying, just parked outside of homes like a car would be and they were told that they have to be out of sight in the summer time.

Laurie and Ed ate at one of two restaurants that were open and stayed at one of three hotels that are open this time of year. They were even offered a ride on a horse drawn carriage/trailer, which they took, as the hill from the Grand Hotel was a bit icy, then Laurie was able to feed the horses a couple of carrots. What a fun time...looks like I’ll be adding something new to my bucket list now.

We join Kristin Ojaniemi from Discover The U.P. for a winter tour from a few year-round residents. Sit back and enjoy the tour!

Thanks for sharing my pictures! We did have such a nice time onthe Island in winter.

I enjoyed Kristin’s video. There was not nearly that much snow when we were there. One person we spoke with commented that they sure wish that there was more snow. I commented that he should come to Ishpeming, because we have snow!! Between last week Wed and yesterday, we probably got 30 inches!

Such great pictures, Laurie! Like I told you, it's
love to spend a couple of days there around
Christmas. It's got to be beautiful!

I couldn't get the video.
