Marcy Bessolo Hermanson recently made a visit to Fayette Historic State Park which is located between Escanaba and Manistique, 17 miles south of US2 on the Garden Peninsula, which juts out into Lake Michigan. Between 1867 and 1891, this Historic townsite was a busy industrial community that manufactured charcoal pig iron. It now offers visitors a glimpse back into history with the old buildings still standing on the shores of Snail Shell Harbor surrounded by white limestone cliffs and lush, green forests. It is open year round, but check out the webpage on the link above for specifics on the days and hours. You’ll find a Museum Store gift shop, snacks and ice cream, a picnic area and hiking trails, too.

Check out the video from Visit Escanaba for more information about the park. You can also find the history of yesterday’s boom town – Fayette on their blog here: History of an Iron Smelting Town

Fayette has it all! Beautiful location, interesting history and the buildings have been well restored and maintained. Well worth the trip down to see it!

Been there several times, nice park. The drive down the peninsula

on the Goldwing to Fairport is a sweet ride as well.

That's really awesome. The U.P. has left it's mark
for sure!

I made a first time visit last Fall. It was very interesting for more than one reason.

It was at a time very close to Halloween and I encountered this strange site. Even more strange...this was a Mother and Son duo.
Halloween
