So far this summer, the Keweenaw has seen some dramatic weather with high winds knocking down trees, which in turn takes out power lines. We’ve had a number of rainstorms that had accompanying thunder and lightning displays, too, one of which was captured recently by Isaac Diener. He describes today’s photos as “Very intense lightning strikes with a heavy thunderstorm early in the morning around 2 a.m. in Hancock, MI”. Check out those lightning bolts streaking down in the night sky. So spectacular when captured in a photo, since it happens so quickly we only see a fleeting flash and it’s gone.

We’ve also enjoyed a plethora of fantastic sunsets lately. Isaac says we are so spoiled UP here and I have to agree. He captured this incredible sunset one evening recently at the Quincy Mine in Hancock. The dark clouds highlighted by the setting sun are nothing short of stunning. Check out how it lights up the Mine Shaft windows.

To complete this storm report, we get the sound of rolling thunder out at Little Traverse. Jeff Dennis says: “There is nothing like the sound of thunder over Lake Superior.”
