Over last weekend, Melanie Hakala Rossi and friends decided to snowshoe to the tallest waterfall in Michigan, the Douglass Houghton Falls. The adventurers followed Hammell creek from Lake Linden, to get to the bottom of the falls. Melanie said with the warmer weather, the ice on the river/creek has become unstable, so much so that on their last river crossing, one in the group broke through the ice, but somehow avoided getting wet. So anyone venturing along the creek to the falls needs to be careful or the adventure may take a bad turn. You can see there was still quite a bit of snow there on Sunday, both along the creek and on the face of the falls, too. Of course that will change daily, depending on how warm it gets each day.

Melanie recorded a short video of the falls, too. It shows the water flowing through and around the snow on the face of the falls. Make sure you have your volume turned up, so you can hear the water flowing.

Very pretty pictures and video.

Great photos, but the official name of the falls is Houghton - Douglass. Named for Douglas Houghton and C. C. Douglass who was a major figure in the early Copper Country.

Paul, I have to think before I say the name
because it seems so awkward saying the
Douglas Houghton Falls. So I always
remember which way it goes by remembering
which way it doesn't sound natural. Because
Houghton Douglas sounds so much better to me
lol. It's what we always called them as
kids. I can't remember when I first learned
we weren't saying them right.
