Walter Dennis is at it again, with camera and drone, documenting places of interest around the U.P. Today’s adventure with Walter takes us to Keweenaw Bay, between Baraga and L’Anse to check out the Bishop Baraga Shrine that rises some 60 feet above the bluff overlooking US Highway 41.

The following history is shared from Exploring the North webpage: “Frederick Baraga left his home in Slovenia in 1830 for the Catholic missions of the Upper Great Lakes. Father Baraga's intention was to minister to the native peoples of the region. In the process he founded five missions along the south shore of Lake Superior and created a legend.

The last of his missions was sited in the village of L'Anse which had been the site of an earlier Jesuit mission founded in the late 1600's. He remained in L'Anse from 1843 and was consecrated as the first Bishop of the Upper Peninsula in 1853”
Walter gives us a good look at the shrine and the surrounding area, including Keweenaw Bay and US 41, in the drone video.

This place is so stunning. You simply MUST stop
here. Even if you live here, and you've been here,
you gotta go again. The upgrades and additions to
the grounds are beyond phenomenal.
