Winter camping in beautiful Bootjack, outside of Lake Linden, on a Red Pine lined lane. It probably isn’t for everyone, but Rebecca Steffenson is definitely a fan. I think the key to enjoying it is to have the proper equipment, like she does. A good wood stove so the tent stays warm, a good tent, too! I would guess that they make specialized winter camping tents that may be made to withstand some of the winter cold and perhaps hold in some of that wood fire heat. The third shot is my favorite, with the steam coming off the tent. I can imagine myself inside with a good book, toasty warm and peaceful with only the sounds of a crackling wood stove fire surrounding me. And just think, no mosquitoes!

Today’s video showcases Winter in the Keweenaw, including someone with a snowy looking tent in the mix, too.

We used to winter camp for Boy Scouts when I was
growing up. It was called Okpik Winter Camping
Adventure. Last time we did it, we camped in
tents for a couple of days, and then we built our
own snow houses out of a mound of snow we hollowed
out to sleep in. Awesome experience including
sleeping on the lake one night. Lots of unusual
sounds that night as the ice creaked and groaned
underneath you.

Hi
More power to those hearty souls. I'm afraid my
tastes run more to coming back to a snug warm
cabin. One time some friends and I stayed at a bed
& breakfast. It had a hot tub in a room with large
windows. After a day of cross-country skiing,
soaking in the hot tub and watching a gentle snow
fall was wonderful.

Ah yes, Winter camping in the Keweenaw! I have fond yet very frigid memories of doing it a few times. Our equipment in the 70's was OK but not nearly as good as today's. One spends the majority of time simply working to stay fed, hydrated, warm and frankly...alive.

My most vivid memory was a snowshoe trek into Gratiot Lake from US-41. That trip we were expecting to sleep in the cabin of my friend's Uncle but his key didn't work and we didn't feel like breaking in. We were prepared well enough but only spent one night. Of course it all depends on temperature and wind.

Good times but you won't find me repeating them. My wife's idea of any kind of camping was when she was allowed to only take one suitcase into the hotel.

Winter camping, have done it plenty of times and will be doing again soon in the mountains of New Mexico. Last time I went winter camping in the Keweenaw was in college with friends and we had a blast. The equipment these days is much better than even twenty years ago....
