Danielle Adams made a visit to the Log Slide Lookout in the early evening and took in the outstanding view of Lake Superior there. It’s a location that I’ve never been to, so I did some investigating on the web and found the following information on the National Park Service webpage.

“Located at the end of Log Slide Road, about 7 miles west of Grand Marais on Alger County Road H-58. A short walk from the parking lot past historic logging equipment leads to the Log Slide area on top of the dunes. Legend has it that logs sent down the tall dunes on a dry log chute would generate enough friction to cause the chute to catch fire. Today the chute is gone, but the lumberjack stories still linger as you gaze out over the Grand Sable Banks to the east. Recent winter storms destroyed the popular overlook platform, but the path that leads to where the platform stood is still open. Be careful near steep edges! “
So, I guess it looks like I’ll be adding another place to my “bucket” list. So many places to see in the U.P., so little time.

We’re making a video visit to Grand Marais and the Log Slide Overlook, to go along with today’s photos. Remember to stay back from the steep edges!

Beautiful pics and nice video! We visited Grand
Marais and the log slide for the first time this
Summer before my procedure. Really a spectacular
place and a terrific view. I read a warning sign
at the log slide that said, If you go down to
the water's edge... climbing back up is at your
own risk and could take hours!! Needless to say,
I got back in the truck! lol

It's also a beautiful ride from there to
Munising thru the park. Plenty of curves in the
road. I was thinking of Alex and what a great
ride he'd have on the Wing on that road.

If you've never been there, I highly recommend
you make the trip, it's well worth it!!

If only, UC. Grand Pix!

Bob has rode those curves on his Dyna Low Rider.
Not this year however, thanks to Derecho and the
damage it left us.

Hi
Years ago, my parents and I camped at the
Pictured Rocks. One of the day trips was to the
Log Slide. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of
the observation platform. From that, we could
see the Au Sable lighthouse (link below),
though it was only a slim line on the horizon.
It should have been visible in Log Slide #1 but
I didn't see it--maybe the observation platform
made the difference.

Another thing that sticks in my memory was a
young man in a wheelchair, who had a big black
Newfoundland as his service dog. The dog had no
trouble pulling his person through sand.

Here is a repaired/clickable link for the Au Sable Lighthouse from Karen's post just above.

This is one of the great U.P. locations that is still on my bucket list.

U.C.,
There is absolutely no way I could ever climb up (or down) that sand dune hill. I had extreme trouble climbing a much smaller one that was only about 20 feet high.

Can you get to that part of the water's edge by walking along the beach from a location where the dune is not so high?

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, September 18, 2020 - 08:58 pm:

D.A. you can get to the water when in and around
Grand Marais but I don't think by the log slide.
I think I recall that same sign there said, no
public rescue was available either. I did see
people down at the lake's edge too... who knows,
they may still be there! :-)

That county road, H-58 is really paved nice too!
The road N from M28 to Grand Marais is also a
nice ride.
Yep, a trip North needs to be had in the near
future, but we'll be Keweenaw bound!!
