A couple days in a row last week, we had some dandy storm clouds darken the skies over the Keweenaw and several photographers captured them to share. The first photo was snapped by Pam Heide up near Lac La Belle. Ominous looking front over Lake Superior, looking like it’s swallowing the land.

The next two photos were taken up at Eagle Harbor, by E. Neil Harri, who had a front row seat to the impending storms. When those clouds form over the Big Lake and start blotting out the sun, most people head for cover. Not Neil, though, he said it was time to get out and enjoy the fresh air!

And that he did, check out how fresh the air was when the storm arrived bringing pouring rain, thunder and lightning. Don’t worry, Neil was actually safe in his truck. Or is that an old wives tale that inside a vehicle is one of the safest places to be during a lightning storm, as the rubber tires protect you from the strike?

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 - 11:25 pm:

A car does protect you from lightning, but not because of the rubber tyres. It acts like a Faraday cage, sending the electricity around the outside of the vehicle. It should be safe inside, as long as you are not touching any metal. (Of course, this is assuming the car is made of metal. Something like a corvette, which I think are made from fibreglass, wouldn't work this way).

Wow-o-wow pix and wow-o-wow-o-man-o-wow video! And that's why you should always be wearing your aluminum foil scull-cap and briefs.

I second that Wow-o-wow and give that first photo a Whoa - Whoa - Whoa - Whoa - Whoa.Whoa.Whoa

That first one looks like it's preceding an alien invasion. Hard to imagine the temperature, pressure, wind and moisture gradients working to create that.

Dr. Nat's correct but remember a couple of other important things. UNLOCK the doors and move your seats back as far as possible including tilting back. Don't lean forward. Why? A lighting strike could easily set off the air bags and prevent unlocking doors to exit after car potentially bursts into flames.
