Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat (also known as Paul and Nathalie Brandes), were recently in the Keweenaw, exploring what they do best, the Geology of the area and they’re going to share some lessons with us this week. Feel free to take notes... we start today with a visit to the Cliff Mine area (the first two photos), with the Cliffs behind. The bottom two photos were taken from up on top the Cliffs, with that beautiful view from UP there and then the Rubicon, which not only took the Capt. and the Dr. to the top, but also to the Keweenaw.

I’m not going to pretend that I know anything about this subject, but thankfully, Nathalie (Dr. Nat) made a video to explain everything we’re seeing on today’s Pasty Cam. Lesson one: Greenstone Flow and Cliff Mine.

Super green-green pix and a very well done presentation. Thx Capt. & Dr. Nate, you both should consider this as a career...Och aye!

Great view from the top. I hope to be there to enjoy it in person one day soon. It will be much easier than my last hike to Bare Bluff 4 years ago.

I suggest following the video to Youtube. There you can find several other very informative videos that they recently posted, I think from this trip.

I hope I didn't spoil upcoming post plans, Mary. Or maybe I gave you an idea for future ones.

Textbook, workbook, more lectures & videos! Could watch this & learn from these all day. Thanks Dr. Nat!

I forgot to mention the vehicle Mary mentioned. It's a 2016 Wrangler Rubicon Hard Rock edition. What's special is that I personally ordered it from Jeep and later discovered it is the only one built in the world to that specification. It has been a great vehicle!!

I think I asked you after your last Huron Mountain trip, but what brand and model tire does it have? They looked fairly off road capable back then and I think you said the highway ride was not bad. I'm looking to replace the OEM street tires on my F150 tow vehicle.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 - 01:05 pm:

The vehicle originally came with BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM (rock/mud) tires which were great in the mud or on rocks, but horrible in rain and slick roads. I changed them out at around 30k and replaced with BF Goodrich All Terrain KO2 tires, more of an all terrain tires and have been very happy with them, both on and off road. They have performed well in everything from muddy UP trails to rocks and high mountain passes in Utah and Colorado to the two day highway drive to get to those places. They are also wearing nice; 50k on them and only about half worn. I highly recommend them!
