Jean Dessellier has what one might call a “menagerie” of wild critters. On any given day she sees a variety of birds, bunnies, squirrels, deer and more. Today she shares a couple shots she took of a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, both drinking the nectar from her feeder and then just sitting there, probably digesting what he just consumed. Jean’s shots have stunning detail, you can almost count the feathers!

Her next two visitors were on the larger size, with her “Faithful Split-Ear” deer friend. I’m pretty sure she said this sweet, old gal has been visiting their yard for 8 years now. It’s surprising that she’s survived that many hunting seasons and winters. She must know how to hide well and keep warm and fed.

The second deer visitor, Jean named Bucky and she said he was dressed in velvet for his visit this day. When the bucks start growing antlers, you know that fall isn’t too far off. It always amazes me that these animals know how to stay safe from predators. We have a doe or two, that always bring their fawns around by our pond and behind our barn, because they know that they’re safer from coyotes and wolves when they’re closer to the house like that. Earlier this year, a doe brought twins in our field and she hid one up by our pond and the other back by the barn, separating them, we figured, so if a predator found them, it would only get one of them. Pretty smart!

Shawn Malone from Lake Superior Photo in Marquette, shares another video with us today. This time it’s a moth, a Clearwing Hummingbird Moth. Shawn said they let the wildflowers grow in their front yard and this is their reward for doing so. Make sure you turn up your volume, the nature sounds in this video are spectacular. You’ll feel like you’re right there watching this moth in person.

Oh my-oh my...I don't know how much more detail I can take. And don't forger to full-screen the video, which really through me off because I didn't know that hummingbirds had antennae, then I read Mary's commentary. (dumb city-boy, me)

A Hummingbird not humming? What a treat. And a Moth that is humming? What's this world coming to?

Speaking of birds in the U.P., did you see the story about the U.P. Bald Eagle that took out a drone over Lake Michigan? Michigan's Department of Environment was using the $1000 drone to track erosion along the northern shore of Lake Michigan coast when the eagle apparently attacked and took it down.

I also saw that the Netherlands is training eagles to take out drones as part of their Home Security plans.

Alex,
You just need to grow a pair, of wings.
Funny how one little comma can make such a difference.
