Barbara Bouwkamp hustled out to their camp at Big Traverse the other night, to watch a special on PBS, since they don’t have TV at their home. She was disappointed that the local PBS station wasn’t carrying the show she wanted to see, but there was a different show going on outside around the slough near their place. The sun was setting and the water in the slough was doubling Barbara’s pleasure, with reflections to accompany the beautiful bonus added to Barbara’s evening.

David Marvin made today’s video, showcasing the natural beauty of Michigan’s U.P. and the waters that create this special place. This was shot at Miner’s Beach on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Whitefish Point, St. Martin Bay on Lake Huron, Brevort Lake, Little Brevort Lake, Lower Tahquamenon Falls, Seney Wildlife Refuge and the Straits of Mackinac. Superior beauty

The sloughs behind Big Travers Bay (and Little Traverse Bay) have always fascinated me. There are actually DOZENS of rows of them. They are obviously the remains of previous shorelines. The "points" that separate Big and Little Traverse Bays used to be an island. When the water channel of such a geologic land structure gets filled in by wave and wind action it becomes known as a Tombolo. There are several along Lake Superior's shore.

Are the lines in the upper left of the picture the sloughs? Or is that whole area 'counted' as 1 slough? Thanks for the shot - it helps visualize what you are describing.

I don't know for sure how the local neighborhood sees things but technically a slough is a backwater or swamp that is connected to or very close to an established body of free flowing water. Probably the ones closet to the shore that show up as the darkest areas in the picture are the sloughs in the pictures. They are the ones most commonly filled with water. The very dark brown color is water. That's not to say all the other (and older) depressions or parallel ditches are not sloughs. After a heavy rain they fill with water or at least become quite swampy. Way back in time each one used to be the beach front.
