Horseshoe Harbor is part of the Mary MacDonald Preserve at the tip of the Keweenaw, near Copper Harbor. Marcy Bessolo Hermanson was up there exploring this past weekend and shares some photos of the conglomerate rock formations in the area. The preserve webpage says that these “rock ridge shorelines were formed 600 million years ago”. That’s pretty amazing!

It’s not too hard to get to, but you do have to make a hike to get to the shoreline. The length of the hike depends on the vehicle you’re driving. If you have 4 wheel drive you can drive much closer. Click on the “Mary MacDonald Preserve” link in the first paragraph for directions to get there.

Today’s video is a “Spotlight on Nature: Mary MacDonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor”. It’s quite informative about the preserve and what you’ll find there.

Beautiful area, but they are a little off on their age of formation for the conglomerates. And, they don't mention anything about the most fascinating feature in the Harbor, the stromatolites.

November 5, 2016. There's a photo of one of the
stromatolite formations there, as well as some
commentary that Dr. Nat provided about their age
and how they're formed. It's well worth the hike
out there to see them -- 1.1 billion years old.

Nearby at Hunter's Point there are similar formations that some have also called stromatolites. Others only go so far as saying they were created by cyanobacterial action. Locals have called them "The Hieroglyphs".
