Patterns in today’s Superior shore ice are as intricate as frost on a window. This ice was found near Whitefish Point by Frances Czapski and both shots could have been just frozen overnight. My favorite of the two, though, is the second shot, where you can see right through it, that the water is moving around underneath and the tops of the rocks are just peeking out of the icy covering.

The third photo is a self-portrait by Frances. She asked, “Are you a crazy Yooper?” And replied to her own question, saying, “I sure am! The sun was warm and the blue water looked tempting, so I ran into Lake Superior for a quick iceberg photo shoot and it felt incredible!” So what do you think, is she crazy or is she just filled with Yooper Sisu?

Frances also shares with us, a video she took on Superior’s shoreline. Turn up the volume to hear the ice moving over the rocks on the shores of Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay. It sounds quite amazing!

Thank you for the images, Frances! Beautiful and
intriguing! No, you're not crazy, you're fully
alive! Good for you!

Great photos, Francis!
But, isn't asking then answering your own question the first sign of madness? ;-)

I think it is Capt, but madness is fine if you're mad at the time.

Talking TO yourself is normal.
Carrying on a conversation is indeed a warning sign unless of course you are getting good advice.

Taking rock pics through the ice is a difficult but rewarding challenge. An easier task is a sunny day through the refraction from shallow waves in a place like Presque Isle park in Marquette. The higher rocky shores allows for perch using a longer lens looking straight down from a distance of 6 to 20 feet.

Presque Isle Park

Great shot D. A. (Midwested)! Have seen those rocks many a time at Presque Isle, which most certainly is closed right now. Which, if they get as much snow as predicted this weekend, would be closed anyway.
