There are certain landmarks that folks look for to know they’re home or at least close to home. Nancy Haun captured three such landmarks for us Yoopers and shares them today. Starting as she was coming into Houghton, she zoomed in on the Quincy Hill for a shot of the Quincy Mine Shaft and the Steam Hoist building. Neat perspective with the snow covering the trees all around it. Nancy also snapped a photo of the only thing that connects the Island we call the Keweenaw to the rest of the Upper Peninsula, the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. I’ve talked to a number of folks that say when they see the bridge come into view, they know they’re home again.

Nancy’s third photo is from her neck of the woods in the L’Anse area. That’s the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee. I’m guessing this church signifies home to folks for a number of reasons and is a landmark for those that live in Skanee, easily recognizable and letting them know they’re almost there.

Cathy McKenzie lives near Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ahmeek, which is on US41, so again, a landmark for those that live in that part of the Keweenaw. The church bells ring every day for the 6:00 p.m. hour. The day she recorded this video, the tune was “Morning has Broken”. Peaceful way to begin or wind down the day.

These pictures have the colors and look of old fashioned colorized postcards! Beautiful effect!
