While Paul and Nathalie Brandes (Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat) were here in the Keweenaw visiting, they took in a number of the local attractions and we’ll be chronicling them in the next week or so. Today’s excursion was a hike to the top of Bare Bluff in the Lac La Belle/Bete Grise area to take in the outstanding view toward the Keweenaw tip and back toward Bete Grise. Capt. Paul said the sign is at the fork about 3/4 of a mile in from the parking area. He added that having done the entire loop, he can safely say going left at the fork is much easier (and shorter) than going right. They met a large group of college aged girls and their leader from Wisconsin up there at the same time, so when they found out Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat were geologists, they asked for an impromptu lecture on the geology of the Keweenaw and Lake Superior. Later in the day, they caught up with them again, in Copper Harbor and the group bought them lunch as a nice “thank you” gesture.

Colton Wesoloski provides today’s video entitled My Michigan Tech Experience and like one of the songs in his video, ‘He did it all – He lived’, including a hike to the top of Bare Bluff! It’s a ten minute synopsis of his time here in the Keweenaw and well worth the watch.

Great video

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, August 16, 2019 - 05:55 pm:

My Michigan Tech Experience video:
Wow, what a compendium of the Michigan Tech Experience!

It sure looked familiar to me. (Note the absence of classes, textbooks, study sessions — Ha ha!).

That video certainly captured nearly the full MTU/Copper Country/Keweenaw experience!

I usually get painfully bored with any video more than ≈ 3 minutes in length. (Perhaps that speaks to the need for more ruthless editing of videos in general.)

That was definitely not so in this case, as this video had me utterly rapt!

Minor nitpicks:
If anything, I found the extremely rapid pace (almost a blur in places) to be a bit annoying (What's the rush? Such memories are to be savored!), and I found the musical accompaniment irritating (I rarely like vocal (raucous screaming) accompaniment with videos; I'd much prefer something less grating, preferably classical music.

Bottom line: Two thumbs up!
Two thumbs up!

Fabulous video.
How many locations could you guys identify?
Or maybe NOT identify?

Obviously, I did NOT notice any consumption of adult beverages.

Capt. Paul,
Did you bring some Rhyolite home?
How was Smith Fisheries's Road driving up?

Thanks for the gorgeous pix and memories, Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat...those looked exactly like my hike, years ago.

Thanks for featuring us, again, Mary! ;-)

Only rhyolite photos, D.A., as the area is now part of the Michigan Nature Association lands so removal of anything is discouraged. Still, it was a beautiful day for a hike. The group of young ladies up there were part of a geology field trip so they were visiting many locations in the area, but were very elated that they got a geology lesson at their first stop of the trip.

The road to the parking area is great. I wouldn't be afraid to take a car back there these days.

The BEST video I've seen in a long, long time.
Outstanding!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, August 18, 2019 - 09:13 am:

Good morning, all. I haven't been on the site
for a while now. I always used to get an e-mail
when pasty came up every day. I haven't gotten
one in quite some time. So I got out of the
habit of checking every morning.

Outstanding video!!! Like FRNash, I lose
interest in videos if they last more than a few
minutes but this one captured so much of the
area that it kept me interested the whole time.

Have a great day!
