If you’re looking for a spot to get a good view, high above Lake Superior and out to the tip of the Keweenaw, then a hike up to the top of Bare Bluff is in order. Melanie Hakala Rossi and a friend made that trek this past weekend. I’m not sure how far it is to the top, but I’m told that if you hike the trail clockwise, it’s a little easier than if you take the trail that goes counterclockwise. Just be prepared for a good hike uphill. You can see from Melanie’s two photos, that once you get to the top, the spectacular view will make it well worth your time and energy.

We have a video today, with the same views from Bare Bluff. Kind of nice to take in the view when you’re not out of breath from climbing!

Gorgeous! I still need to make that hike one of
these days!

It's well worth it Dunerat, if you're able. That was my first hike ever in the UP and it was a day exactly like the first photo. I walked out from the tree-line and was mesmerized. The hiking intensity level is moderate, with a fairly steep incline near the top and the trail was well marked with blue spots on the trees . If I recall, there is an easier route, but it takes longer to get there. Wish I had the strength to go again.

The two girls with the sun in a spiderweb bag are standing by the mountains south...talking with the blue snake that makes holes in the wind with his whistle.

Nat and I have to hike up there to get some photos for my upcoming book. Only a couple more weeks and we'll be in the Keweenaw for 4+ weeks!! ;-)

Bare Bluff is indeed spectacular. I need to go back during peak Autumn colors. For those interested in some additional views including the trails on the hike please refer to my Pasty Gallery of Bare Bluff

Capt. Paul, I'm sure you know but I must say the Rhyolite outcroppings there are great.

The trek is indeed easier when done clockwise. The full trail is actually a loop. Starting counter clockwise takes you down, almost to the Lake and then back up again. Clockwise out and then counter clockwise back (retracing your steps in) is both the shortest and also the easiest route.

There's a trail up to Bare Bluffs now? I hiked up there in the 1970's and had to use a compass to bushwhack my way there.
