This morning I noticed Calumet is warming up, it's still in the teens and 20's at night. A far cry from the brutal sub-zero temps we've seen over the winter, but still dependent on the trusty home furnace to keep yoopers alive. Thought I would dust off a Shoebox Memory from a couple of decades ago, to share again, this time with moving pictures... the drama of winter life back in the roaring 20's. I found myself laughing all the way through this, realizing how radically life has changed in the last century. The thermometer in the opening scenes almost looks like a remote control or a smartphone :) I hope you enjoy the film as much as I did.

Have a good week :o)

Good morning Charlie and all:

Cute 1920s film that forgot to mention that all the insulation shown was all asbestos back then.

Still a good example of what one needs to do today to save energy.

Hope that Spring will finally arrive at Calumet.

That is some video! And you're right JT about the asbestos . . . it worked, but was sure nasty stuff.

I remember my uncle Larry Yowell working at a coal place in Copper City, many years ago.

Loved the video. My Grandma had a coal fired boiler in her basement.

While the use of Asbestos was dramatically curtailed beginning in the early 1970's, it's still in use sparingly, primarily in industrial and commercial applications but also in some roofing and flooring materials. More importantly, most of the Asbestos used in occupied spaces prior to 1973 is still there. If it's not damaged or disturbed it's considered safe "enough".
