The archive had a number of beauties on this day throughout the past 20 years. Today’s selection shows off the beauty of sky and the Big Lake, starting in 2003, with a sunrise over the Escanaba River snapped by Donn de Yampert. It doesn’t get much more beautiful than this!

In 2006, we join Kathy Jennings on Lake Superior's shoreline, where you can go from sand, to small stones (and agates), to conglomerate rock, to sandstone, which is what Kathy found on a windy, rainy day visit. I find it amazing how those sandstone rocks have been there for ages and ages, enduring the rough Superior waves washing over them and still haven't eroded away to nothingness.

Joy Ziemnick made a visit to the lookout over Copper Harbor on the way up Borckway Mountain, back in 2014. It's always a great spot for snapping photos of the town of Copper Harbor any time of year. The day Joy was UP there, the ice was still in the Harbor, which is a bit unusual in May.

Our current photo is also from Joy Ziemnick, taken from her home in Cedar Bay a couple weeks ago when the Northern Lights were dancing in the night skies. So many stars dotting the horizon and then the Aurora Borealis streaks the darkness, too. Pure U.P. beauty!

Enjoy a bit more of the Northen Lights with our video today, made by Tim Steinmetz back in 2013.

Edward Abbey: The ideal society can be described, quite simply, as that in which no man has the power or means to coerce others.

I see in the Copper Harbor photo there is a group of buildings with blue shingles. The only place I ever see blue shingles is in the Copper Country. Are they unique to the Copper Country? As A child I stayed at some cottages on the Portage River called the Blue Top Cabins.

I must admit that I like the 1st two pictures much
more than the third. Can you tell I'm more than
ready for summer?
