Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech is always a big event here in the Houghton/Hancock area. It’s taking place this week in real time, too, but today’s photos are some of the ones we’ve featured in our archives. Our own late, Daryl Laitila (RIP) snapped the first photo back in 2010. The theme for the statue building contest that year was: Games We Know, Captured in Snow.

Paul and Nathalie Brandes (also known as Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat) were in town for the festivities in 2015 and took in some of the All-nighter statue building excitement to share with us. The theme that year was: While Frozen in the Ice and Snow, We Dream of Vacations on Which to Go.

Then in 2016, Paul and Nathalie were back in town once again braving the cold and lasting as long as they could for the All-nighter after traveling most of the day to get here. Of course they snapped a shot of the U.P. shaped statue, since they enjoy getting to these parts whenever they can. The theme for that year was: As Snow Accumulates at Alarming Rates, We Show Our Love for the Fifty States.

Jason Asselin was in town that same year, 2016 and made a video of some of the statues, including the U.P. one in the above photo. Enjoy the tour!

If you’re wondering what the schedule of activities are for Winter Carnival, check out this link: 2018 Winter Carnival. The theme this year is: Myths and Tales of the Past in Our Frigid Forecast.

Pack your thermals, Capt...your going from 70' to 0'.

In the past, I've always been too late in deciding to attend Winter Carnival and so all the rooms were already booked. I just checked and the Holiday Inn Express still has a room available for the next 4 nights at a whopping rate of $272 per day. I'm pretty sure I could find a very nice room in downtown Chicago today for less money, but I know I wouldn't have as much fun (even if I went to a Blackhawks game).

Maybe I can duck out Thursday and shoot U.P. there, Busy the next two days in Marquette, Munising, Manistique, Iron Mt., and L'Anse.

Nice review, the statues are amazing!

Alex, don't forget to take a break now and then buddy!!
