Our archive adventures today are a mixture of places, starting back in 2001 with a look at Mackinac Island in the winter. Jon Jacobson was there giving us a view of the Arnold Dock and a portion of the marina iced in.

We jump ahead a number of years to 2014, with an interesting shot from Anthony Abe. Quite a creative way to deal with the waist deep snow on the roof, with an ingenious way to lift the snow blower up and onto the roof. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

Then in 2015, JT-in-Chicago found a photo in a 1903 book called “Souvenir of the Copper Country”, out of the Library of Congress, that he shared for a Shoebox Memory. He thought the photo titled, “Profile Rock”, looked a lot like what is called the Natural Wall on the Old Colony Road and he was correct. Interesting read about the geology of the phenomenon. You can check it out here: January 25, 2015.

Our current shot goes along with the roof clearing archive photo. Only Cheryl Johnson didn’t have to put a snowblower up on her roof to clean the snow off. She has a metal roof and it unloaded all by itself, Cheryl said, coming down and landing like cement blocks. She said it took ˝ hour to chop and snow blow it all away. Winter fun in the Keweenaw!

A winter visit to Mackinac Island like our first archive photo here today, is not something many of us get to do, so the Pasty Cam is taking you all on the ferry ride across the icy waters, for a look at winter there at the beginning of this year. Bundle up for the ride across!

Mind-blowing pix and the video was awesome, so barren and bleak...gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Hi
Regarding Mackinac Island, I wonder if the ice bridge to St. Ignace formed this year? In a documentary about life on the island in winter, they showed folks driving back and forth to the mainland. In one case a man rode his bicycle, but, Alex, I don't think you'd want to try it on your motorcycle.

I went to the "Natural Wall" for the first time in 2016. You would never get a view like that one today. The forest has grown up, almost completely blocking it from clear view. You can still see enough of it to appreciate its beauty though. The best time would be in late Fall or early Spring when there are no leaves on the trees. Today's old photo appears to be taken during just such a time of year as well. It's at the top of a very steep ravine much like the one that lays claim to Hungarian Falls. It's a fairly easy quarter mile walk through the woods to get to the edge of the ravine, although there is no trail. It's a very steep climb after that to get a better view, although you can still see a bit of it from the top.

I liked the video. I think Mackinac Island is a neat place. I never tire of going there.
