Today’s archive theme is water, beginning with a shot of the Polar Bear Dive in the Portage Canal, back in 2004. Z-Man snapped the photo just as this brave man took off from the ice and before he hit the cold, cold water. YEOW!

The water Brenda Leigh captured in 2009, was actually frozen on the Lake Superior shores of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. She said the column of ice to the right of the person in red, was actually a waterfall and you could hear the water still running inside the formation, making almost a musical sound.

A different shoreline of Lake Superior appeared on the 2012 Pasty Cam this day, snapped by Ashlee Harvey. This is the culvert that goes under M-26 by Great Sand Bay on the way to Copper Harbor. You can see the water inside the culvert is frozen, that’s Ashlee’s son in the opening, looking like he’s balancing on his hands there. And of course that’s Lake Superior out beyond. It looks like there wasn’t much ice in the Bay there that year.

The Polar Bear Dive photo got me thinking that it might be fun to watch a few of the divers from a previous year at the Heikinpaiva celebration in Hancock. This clip is from 2015, published by Finlandia University. Click on the following link if you’d like to find out more about this year’s events: Heikinpaiva 2018 schedule.

Have to hand it to the folks in the Polar Bear Dive -
that doesn't even look appealing!

I noticed someone from Scotland jumped (at 2:03), I'll bet that froze his haggis.

2018 Polar Bear Dive, next Saturday, the 27th at 3 pm. Be there or be warm (and sane). I want to stick around until Monday the 5th for the Squeaky Cheese making workshop.
